I started studying for gmat 2 months ago. First week I took a practice test and scored 37 on verbal. Since then I have studied for the verbal section by practicing hundreds of OG questions and my verbal score on my next five official practice tests have been 38,38,40,40,40. 2 weeks ago I took my first attempt on the real GMAT and even though I got the same quant score i have been getting on practice tests my verbal score was 33. I was extremely disappointed and spent the next 2 weeks studying and practicing verbal OG questions. My accuracy improved greatly even on the 700-800 level questions of GMAT club. Today i took my second attempt my quant score was even better but my verbal went down to 29. I feel like the questions that appear on the actual test are different or maybe its just the pressure. I am not sure what I am doing wrong. How am i consistently scoring significantly less then even my first attempt on a practice tests without any study.

Anyone else experience this or does anyone have any suggestions?
Any help is appreciated.

Consider getting the ESR to see what may have happened. Perhaps you notice you didn't perform as well on RC as you normally do during your mocks or you thought you were during the exam itself. Thinking over what you may be doing differently on actual exams compared to mocks may be helpful as well. Taking, for example, a long break before you started the Verbal section.

Not clear what all mocks have you given at time of preparing..

Pressure and nerves on the GMAT is a very real thing! So, I do think that may be your issue. That said, here is an article you can check out that provides some advice on how to deal with testing anxiety.

Hi ahmedtnvr,

I'm sorry to hear that Test Day didn't go as well as planned. When these types of score drops occur, the two likely "causes" involve either something that was unrealistic during practice or something that was surprising (or not accounted for) on Test Day. Before we discuss any of those potential issues though, it would help if you could provide a bit more information on how you've been studying and your goals:

Studies:
1) On what dates did you take your 2 Official GMATs and how did you score on each (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores)?
2) How long have you studied? How many hours do you typically study each week?
3) What study materials have you used so far? What “brands” of CATs/mocks have you used?
4) On what dates (or approximate dates) did you take EACH of your CATs/mocks and how did you score on EACH (including the Quant and Verbal Scaled Scores for EACH)?

Goals:
5) What is your overall goal score?
6) When are you planning to apply to Business School and what Schools are you planning to apply to?

If you took your Official GMAT at a Test Center, then you might also choose to purchase the Enhanced Score Report. While the ESR doesn’t provide a lot of information, there are usually a few data points that we can use to define what went wrong on Test Day (and what you should work on to score higher). If you purchase the ESR, then I'll be happy to analyze it for you.
