Hey all,
I scored 660 (43Q, 38V) on official Practice Test 1 last Sunday morning. I think I can perform a bit better than I did on that test because I took that one on Sunday morning after a tiring Friday and Saturday spent celebrating a friend’s wedding. Maybe I’m closer to 44Q and 40V. Additionally, I believe I can benefit from implementing timing strategies.
Nevertheless, here’s what I’ve done so far:
- Most of Magoosh 3 month study plan. Wanted to lay down some foundations. I was also unemployed until September, so I got ~2/3rds of it done in August.
- 7 weeks of GMAT ninja’s 13 week study plan.
+ I feel like I’m not learning much using this plan. I've found myself just doing problems and rushing to the next problem set. I bought an LSAT book and have done fairly well on those RC and CR practice sets (~80% accuracy)
- I've worked through a bunch of OG questions. I have the OG as well as the OG Math and OG Verbal books from 2022. Like I said, I worked through a bunch, but still have a bunch left (maybe half).
- I have the Practice Question set from the mba website, which I used for one set of 32 math problems so far
- I was feeling a bit shakey on my math foundations so I picked up the MGMAT book set and have done most of the Foundations of Math book.
I’m planning on transitioning to using the MGMAT books but I’m struggling to develop an effective and efficient study plan. I don’t think I need to spend much time on RC or CR as my accuracy on those questions is quite high and my pacing isn’t bad. I think I could really benefit from implementing some timing strategies as well as speeding up my SC. SC is something that I haven’t really studied yet. My accuracy is high but my timing is in the ballpark of 1:30-1:45 per question. I'm hoping to get down to 45-1:00 per question with some focus on studying SC, which should free up some time and help my RC and CR.
What I’m struggling with the most right now is determining what to study and when to study it. I know I need to do a lot of quant. I think I have a lot of room for growth considering I haven’t started my MGMAT All the Quant book yet. I’m guessing I should go through that whole book then start doing the SC part of All the Verbal, but I’m nervous about losing my math proficiency while I’m focusing on SC. And of course, I’m looking to use my OG questions sparingly and would like to use the 6 official practice tests efficiently. I also have the MGMAT CAT exams that I’m considering using to practice timing strategies without having to use up my official practice tests.
I looked into using TTP but I think their plans look excessively long and a bit expensive. I really don’t think I need to do all the work they indicate. I also think I’m closer to a 47-48 than my score shows because I know I’ve been making a lot of sloppy mistakes (question misreads, sloppy algebra, and diving too quickly into one method of problem solving without considering better options).
Ideally I’d take the exam mid December with a target of ~740.
I could definitely use some help. Let me know what you think!

If you think your fundamentals are solid on Verbal, consider working on your solving approach. May boost your score a bit. Had a 6-hour student for example who went from a V41 to a V40 in about 10 days. Perhaps work with a study buddy who is really strong on the section to see how they approach it. There's a study buddy thread on gmatclub you could check out/sign up to.
For Quant, perhaps slowing yourself a bit to not make the "sloppy mistakes" you mention could be helpful as well.
How to get a V40 or higher on the GMAT? What about a V51?

I think I'm going to try and get access to the MGMAT Self Study Toolkit.
I bought my MGMAT set a few years ago and no longer have access to the the study plan / GMAT Navigator.
I'm hopeful that those two things will have a significant impact on my abilities.
