Hello,

I am a full-time working professional currently preparing for the GMAT Focus edition. I am planning to apply to business schools for '25 intake in the United States. Ideally I would like to apply to the top 15 schools and thus I wanted some advice on how to prepare for the exam accordingly.

I have already been studying for the past 4-5 months or so, but I must admit my study schedule has been scattered with a few breaks and inconsistentency. Generally speaking though, I have been able to allow for 2 hours on the weekdays and 4-5 hours on the weekends. I have used eGMAT's course to learn the learn the Verbal part of the test and I was quite happy with the course (the course was for the old GMAT format but I found it applicable for the FE as well). Also, I have been practicing Maths (both DS and PS) from the OG textbook and GMAT Club questions. I have also purchased all the official practice tests and taken 6 of them so far.

Here is the issue: I seem to have hit a ceiling in my prep. After finishing my Verbal studies, I self studied for Math and DI sections. Once I was done with these, I felt quite confident in doing the practice tests. However, they have not panned out like I would have hoped. Currently, my scores range from 635-655 and my target score is 695+. I seem to be doing quite well in Verbal (generally 96 percentile) so I feel I would be ready for that section with just a bit more practice. However, Quant seems to be holding me back (generally around 71 percentile).

I have a technical background so I dont think my fundamentals are necessarily weak. It just seems that during the test, I am not able to figure out what the question is asking for in time, or end up making very silly mistakes such as misreading or a calculation error. As for the DI section (generally 79 percentile), I am very pressed for time. I am spending too much time on MSR, graphs, two part type questions and this leads me to basically guess the last 5 or so questions.

When I look back on the errors I made on the official practice tests, I am able to solve almost all my Quant errors and DI errors without searching for solutions or looking at any answers.

Can anyone provide some advice on how to proceed from here? Would purchasing a prep course help with the above? I am worried that it may lead to spending too much time covering concepts that I already know. At this point, it seems like I am taking a scatter gun approach (trying questions from GMAT Club, my Error Logs, OG Book) in trying to improve my Quant and DI skills, which is not helping. I would have liked to have taken the test by the end of March, but that timeline does not seem feasible anymore considering my score. Thus, I am planning to complete the test by late April / early May. What approach should I take now to maximize my Quant and DI score?

The higher level questions in Quant test you on multiple concepts in the same question and the biggest challenge here is to identify what is being tested. An algebra question may actually test you on number properties for example x(y+a) < (x+a)y when x, y and a are positive is actually testing your number properties skills. For this, you need to understand the inter-relations between the concepts very well. You may not need to go through the entire test prep content but I would advise you to go through the concepts that trouble you. Or better still, you could go through all concept videos but fast forward the parts that you already understand very well.

And yes MSR and Two Part Analysis do trouble many people. I have shared my discussions on these two here:Multi Source Reasoning Video
