I appeared for my second attempt of GMAT focus on November 6th, 2024 and managed to score a 595 (Q81/V84/DI74). I appeared for my first attempt on May 19th, 2024 and ended up with a 535 (Q81/V80/DI68).

I saw the best improvement in the Verbal section. I went from a 46th percentile to 91st percentile in Critical reasoning; while I also went from 55th percentile to 86th percentile on the Reading Comprehension section.

Even though I had a score improvement, I am clearly not happy with the outcome as I was consistently scoring well on the official mocks. My official mock scores ranged between 685 and 735, and I even managed to score 755 on re-attempt of official mock 4. On the mocks, my Quant scores ranged between Q86-Q90; Verbal Reasoning scores swung between V83-V86; and Data Insights scores ranged between DI81-DI89 even. Hence I was pretty confident that I'd be able to achieve a respectable score of 665 at the very least.

As for the exam, The Quants section was comparable to the mocks. There were 2 difficult questions which ended up consuming 9 minutes of my time in that section alone. That was my biggest mistake, as a result of which I was left with less time per question for the last 5 questions, due to which I made a mess of the 20th and 21st questions entirely due to careless calculation mistakes. The questions really were not that tricky, and I was well versed with the concepts tested, so the mistakes were entirely due to time pressure. I would not complain about the verbal section, but the Data Insights section completely threw me off. The DI section in the exam was substantially more difficult than the DI section of the official mocks. One of the the Graphical Interpretation questions was extremely weird (I cannot describe it because I am bound by the non-disclosure agreement put forward by GMAC), Table Analysis questions were way more complicated than both the official mocks and 705-805 level questions on GMATClub. In short, the difficulty level of the mocks and the exam for Data Insights were not at all comparable.

When it comes to tackling Quant questions available on the GMATClub forum, I deal with sub 505 to 655 level questions with ease. My accuracy on the 655-705 level questions is somewhere around 88%; and for the 705-805 level, my accuracy is just under 80%; the accuracy for 805+ level is around 62%. And ironically, Quant section has been my strongest suit all along.

I understand that more work needs to be put in on all fronts in order to unlock the target score that I have been striving for, but my confidence has definitely taken a hit after consistently scoring well on the official mocks and ending up with a paltry score of 595 on test day.

As I have been gunning for the R2 application cycle for fall 2025 intake, I do not have much time at hand for a re-attempt. Hence I was planning to retake the exam in another 5 weeks time. Is it advisable to have a go at it again within 5 weeks or do I need more time and prep in order to hit my target score?
Hi sravojitgoswami,

Rather than asking whether 5 weeks is enough, you may want to think about whether 5 weeks is too much. If I were you, I'd seriously consider retaking ASAP (after the 16-day minimum). That said, I get your point about the hit to your confidence. Pushing the retake back isn't a major problem as long as you have enough practice tests left and can get back to your current peak. Perhaps that will also give you some time to really lock your time management strategy down (so that you don't have to rush through the last 5 question in a section, as you had to this time in quant).

All the best.

Hey Sravojit
You’re in the same boat as me
Ive given all 6 official mocks with two 695 scores , 745, 755, 735, 715

I gave my first FE on scored a miserable 585. I gave it again after the minimum 16 days ban, and scored 655

Now here the interesting part
I got DI74 on my first attempt.
( 13 wrong, 7 correct with 8 wrong in a row, imagine that ) . I did not practice DI much therefore the result.

Practiced a lot from OG, but again to my surprise got DI75 in my second attempt. I was confident if scoring around 695-705 but 1 wrong question in quants and a surprisingly bad performance in DI (9 wrong...although when i was solving questions it felt like i was answering correctly), got me a 655

One thing to note here is i did feel DI was comparatively very hard on official exams than mocks, so dont rely on your mock performance.

Practice all official questions, guess where you
Feel its not worth the time, you can give spend that saved time in DS tables/graphs for example and get those correct

Hi sravojitgoswami,

Without any context, I’d say what you’re aiming for is quite ambitious. However, based on your MBA.com practice exam scores, I don’t see any reason why you can’t reach 655 on your next GMAT attempt. That said, have you been able to identify why your score dropped on test day? Do you think nerves might have played a role? Either way, here are a few articles that should help as you prepare for your retake:
