Would you take a look at my profile and give me your thoughts?

About me:
1. White Male
2. 24 years old (will be 25 when school begins)
3. Born and raised in Richmond, Virginia

GMAT:
I took my first GMAT on April 28th and scored a 640 (Q-42, V-36, IR-6, AWA-5). I intend to take the GMAT again in early August to see if I can get my score up to the 700s.

Work Experience:
I work for a top tier financial consulting company as an Investment Operations Analyst. I began in this position in June of 2012 and will have 3 years of work experience by the time I start school. I have been promoted twice already (with another one likely in the 6 month horizon) as well as given a Team Leader position where I oversee 3 other employees. I also have a significant amount of experience with project management. Outside of people and project leadership, my day to day job is essentially collecting and checking data points for thousands of different long only products.

Education:
I graduated from The Virginia Military Institute with a degree in Economics & Business and a concentration in Financial Management. I graduated with distinction and a GPA of 3.38. One thing I should mention (and I've considered using my optional essay for this) is that my sophomore year was what crushed my GPA. If the grades from that year are removed, my GPA would be closer to a 3.7 or 3.8. I did not accept a commission in the military, but I did go through rigorous military training and lived in a military environment for all four years of college. I intend to use a lot of these experiences in my essays.

Leadership Experience:
1. I lead a team of 3 on a daily basis. This includes monitoring their performance statistics, helping them prioritize work, and conducting check-ins to assist in matters of professional development.
2. I lead a team of 7 on a quarterly basis in an extremely high risk/high profile project. This team quality checks approximately 900 Excel based templates completed by our department that are then used by the rest of the firm. I am responsible for matters of data integrity (making judgment calls), team leadership, and assisting with any project work related to this initiative.
3. I lead/have led a number of ad hoc project teams.
4. I recruited and trained a team for the Tough Mudder coming up on June 15th.
5. I was part of my Student Government in college.

Community activities and other extra-curricular work:
1. For the past 2 years, I have participated in a handful of community initiatives all aimed at improving the my local community (blood drives, park clean ups, and feeding the homeless to name a few). Six months ago, I applied for a formal position on the council that organizes the events, but was originally denied. I have since been made a formal member and am now responsible for the planning and running of these community service events. The council is comprised of about 10-15 members that organize events for an office of 200.
2. Half Marathon – Washington DC – 2014
3. Tough Mudder– Virginia - June 15th – I am using this as an opportunity to raise $1000 for a charity that helps wounded veterans.
4. I am currently training for my first full marathon.

Short Term goal: Break into Venture Capital by getting a job at a medium to small sized VC firm. Because this would be a career change for me, my biggest goal is to get hands on experience with Venture Capital.
Long Term Goals: Attain an upper management position at a medium to small sized Venture Capital Firm.

My MBA choices in order of preference: Carnegie Mellon, Georgetown, and Maryland. I would also consider applying to UVA if I could get my GMAT up.

Looking forward to your feedback. Thanks!

Hey dude,
Well, outside that one sticky issue of the GMAT things look really good for you. You have great work experience in a great industry. You got REAL leadership, real volunteer work and some sweet extras to boot (like being part of the Student GO). So great stuff there.

Now though is the time to think about the GMAT and what you want to do. Since in your case the GMAT is currently the biggest weaknesses, the best single piece of advice I can give you is: Only apply with the BEST possible GMAT (I mean when you are hitting your max). There is NO advantage whatsoever to rushing things, if you can get 30 or 50 points higher, even if it takes you one year of brain-breaking to to get that score. I mean right now the GMAT will define what level of school you can apply to, and that will define what level of VC job you can get. And the better the GMAT the better the school the better the job. So it's worth going that extra mile or ten for the GMAT, especially in your case, where everything else seems nice and solid.

Hope this helps!

Figured I would check in. I took the GMAT again and scored a 710 (48 Q, 40 V, 6/6 AWA, 4/8 IR) What do you think my chances of the following would be?
-Tepper (applied R1)
-McDonough (applied R1)
-Smith (applying R2)
-Darden (applying R2)

I was really disappointed with my IR score...lowest I've ever had. I guess the overall score compensates though.

Thank you!

Hey good sir!
Congrats!

Well, first of all, (I mean I guess you know this, but...) contact the schools you applied to and let them know of your new score.

Second, I think you can aim higher than Smith/Darden if you like - What about Columbia, MIT, HBS, Booth, NYU? All pretty good finance schools, so far as I know ;) I mean, if you are already LEADING others at a top tier finance institute, have a great GMAT (now), why not aim higher?

And time is short! So get started!

Best,
Jon
