Hi,
I am a 25 year old Indian male applicant, with 3 years of work experience.I took the GMAT on the 5th Of September 2014, and I am now interested in evaluating my chances of admission in a top 20 business school.
GMAT: 720 (Q47 V42 IR 8 AWA 5+ expected)
GPA : 3.0
Work Experience: 3 Years as a software engineer in the Casino and Gambling Industry.
To briefly summarize my work experience and extracurricular activities:
Education :
BE in Information Technology from a top university in South India. GPA : 3.0
Work Experience:
I worked as a Software Engineer for a company that delivers software products, business systems and games to casinos around the world.
I regularly interacted with clients, and was recognized as a top performer in the team. Although, I did not reach the position where I had to lead a team.
I have been lauded by higher management for possessing outstanding presentation skills, and have conducted numerous workshops on complex topics relating to technical and domain knowledge.
Extracurricular
1. Was deeply involved in the CSR division of my company, where I assumed an unofficial leadership role, guiding the fundraising, marketing and charitable activities of the group.
Took the initiative to transform the CSR group from a struggling outfit that lacked the necessary funding and volunteering resources,to a thriving group of individuals who became the very heart of the company culture while at the same time positively impacting the lives of the orphaned and abandoned elderly in non profit organizations across the state.The effort involved aggressive marketing, multiple presentations and outreach efforts.
2. Coordinated and Anchored major cultural events in the company, such as the company Annual Day. I was unanimously appreciated for my public speaking skills.
I intend to pursue an MBA with a focus on Product Management. I am a voracious reader,avid traveler and a keen follower of global events.
I would be highly grateful if somebody could clear my concerns below:
1. Will my experience in a non-mainstream industry,The Casino and Gambling Industry,work against me?
2. Do I stand a chance of admission at a top 20 school in the United States? I am aware that my GPA is on the lower side.
3. I am as yet early into my research, but I have so far shortlisted Darden School of Business(Virginia),McCombs school of business(Austin) and UCLA. What are my chances of admission in these specific schools?

Hey Praveen,
Good to hear from you. Let me jump straight into your questions:
1. Not al all! On the contrary, this will probably be an ADVANTAGE! It's interesting, it's big, there's lots of money involved.
2. Top 10 are probably out due to your low GPA from a non-IIT. But I'd say 10-30 should be about right.
3. Those are good schools for you to aim at. They pretty much fit within the range that I was writing about. You should though add three more schools to your list at least. If you need a bit of help choosing your MBA have a look at this link here: https://bit.ly/814GmatC
