Hi,
I am in the process of shortlisting B-Schools for a Fall 2015 admit and I am looking for comments or suggestions on my shortlisted schools:

1. Masters in CS from University of Illinois at Chicago (2008-2010)
GPA: 3.22

2. Bachelors of Technology from Indraprastha University Delhi (2002 - 2006)
GPA/Aggregate: 70% (I am not sure how much that would equal to on the 4.0 scale)

GMAT Score 1: 650 V31 Q49
GMAT Score 2: 710 V40 Q48

Age: 30 years

Work Experience:

2+ years in Alcatel Lucent India as Software Engineer, with 7 months of International experience in Australia and Belgium
- Designed, implemented and led the acceptance testing of FRC(Flexible Routing and Charging) 4.1 for a major telecom operator in Sydney.
- Led a team of test engineers to implement the best testing practices in Alcatel Lucent Belgium after the merger of Alcatel and Lucent.
- Successfully implemented and oversaw the integration of Enhanced Location Service 3.1 for a major client telecom operator in India named Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited.

4 years (at the time of starting MBA hopefully) in Motorola Solutions Chicago as Senior Test Engineer
- Collaborated with several departments to successfully design a product that would control several radios through one interface and reduced
system setup by several man hours across several departments.
- Identified challenges with performance testing, redesigned and implemented the performance testing architecture to facilitate load and stress testing of various components of Public Safety system.

Extra Curricular:
- President and Coach of University of Illinois Chicago badminton club
- President of Indian Graduate student association at UIC

I have short listed following colleges:
Kellogs
Booth
Ross
Duke

Texas McCombs
Kelley
Kenan Flagler
Owen
Olin
Emory

My interest: General Management/Technology/Tech consulting

I prefer to stay in or near chicago but ultimately better college is my priority. I am not optimistic about my chances at the top tier colleges. Please suggest if I should remove or add any colleges to the list.

Thanks

Hello there,
Soo the first thing I would tell you is that I think you could use a paradigm change about how you conceive of your career for the Bschool application. All the stuff the wrote in the detail about the jobs you have held were about tech stuff, which the MBAs care about... well not at all! You worked in IT? Good. We assume you are good at that?

But what about LEADERSHIP?
What about Teamwork?
Risk-taking?
Inventiveness?
Business skills?

The schools are going to look for those things far more than what you have written. And if you help them out by presenting them what they are looking for.... well then....
:)

As a Male Indian Techie from a non-IIT with okay grades, things are going to be tough at Top 10 schools. I'd keep Ross on your list, even if it is a stretch, because of Chicago. Booth would make sense too, but it is even harder to in than Ross. The second part of your list is the more reasonable part. It fits with pretty much the 10-30 ranking, which is where I believe you should fit, if you are able to make this change in your application, and present them an amazing application.

Otherwise your strengths are your work in the US, and your work with two excellent big name companies. Now you just have to show that you have been doing awesome work for these companies.
:)

Thanks for your inputs. I am aware that I have not highlighted the skills that you mentioned in my post here but I see your point :). Even though I am a non-IIT techie, does my Masters in CS from chicago give me any advantage from other indian applicants? or generally there are lot of them as well!

Haha! But yes, it should help a bit. Anything that makes you more employable is gooooooooooood stuff!
