Nachiket,
Allrighty good sir,
Thanks for dropping a line here.

Soo the first thing I tell myself when I read through your profile is that you are gonna have to go mining for some stardust to make your profile attractive to business schools. You know, as an IT/Male/Indian the going is tough... so as we say this is where the tough have gotta get going.

Probably, you can apply somewhere in the range of schools ranked about 20-50 in the US. But your success, (especially at the higher end of the range) will depend on you building a dynamic profile of yourself through your application materials and essays. Being good at Data analytics is only a start. What about your business skills? your leadership experience? your teamwork? or international experience?

And just as importantly, what do you have in your profile that will help you break the mold of "Another male Indian IT dude"? Cause you DO need to break it, and become alive in your essays.

Any ideas? :)

Yeah you are dead right on this .. Will have to make my profile stand out in the Indian/IT/male pool.

a) Business skills :- I can lay emphasis on the business knowledge gained in various domains such as Telecom, Travel and Life Sciences during my 6.5 yrs of tenure in IT industry

b) Leadership & teamwork experience : I can showcase the leadership traits exhibited as a Project Lead cognizant ( my current organization) for 1.5 yrs which includes in areas such as :-

i) Project Management & Delivery
ii) Resource Management
iii) Risk Management
iv) Leading a team of more than 10 people for last 1.5 yrs

c) International exp : I have a limited 6 months of international experience at client location. Can bring out some positives out of that.

What do you recommend that I should be working at to improve my profile ? Can you please clarify some of my queries around improving my profile :-

a) I have heard people from IT background joining non-profit organizations/NGOs for an year or so, how much value does that add to the overall profile ? The reason why I am asking that is I am interested as well as financially sound to leave my current job and take up that option but want to understand how much value addition would that have ?

b) If I re-take the gmat and add 20-30 points to 670..say make it 690-700. How much value add would that have ? I have already taken the GMAT twice and I scored 670 on both the attempts. But I can think of re-taking it again.

c) What suggestions do u give to typical Indian/IT/Male profiles to increase their chances to get admit in colleges ranked 15-20 ?

To summarize, at this point of time I want to understand what should I start working at in order to improve my overall profile and do things which can be a real value add.

Thanks
Nachiket Gupta

Nachiket,
Allrighty, looks like you DO have some good stuff there. The leadership especially and also the international experience are big goodies to have in your bag.

As for the NGO thing, it's ONLY a good idea if you want to change your career to NGO, otherwise look for something to do 1-4 hours a week as a volunteer (preferably where you have the opportunity to lead, and preferably where you can take charge)...

Now all the above things are GREAT! But besides these things, think about (and this doesn't have to be something businessy: "What can I tell them about my, my life, my dreams my work, or my family, that they have likely NEVER heard before???" Find that thing, and it will help you too.

Finally, if you do truly believe you can get 30 points more, it may be worth it to retake, because those are 30 fundamental points there!

Here are some thoughts I have about Indians and retaking the GMAT:
https://admissionado.com/mba/resources/t ... -the-gmat/

That should help you out there....

As for your final question, Top 10 Indian candidates are likely to come from the IITs, have great employers and 720+, 10-20 is often 2nd tier schools with 710+ and also good jobs, but maybe more "Standard" ones...
(this is a REALLY rough way of putting it, and there are lots of differences/exceptions... But it should give you an idea.)

Hope all this helps,
Best,
Jon

Hey Jon,

Really thanks for your inputs !!

Now looking at my current GMAT score and overall profile ( with positives and negatives), can you please suggest a list of 6-8 B schools which I should be aiming at in US/UK/Asia to pursue a career in IT business consulting ?

And I thought I had convinced you to retake the GMAT :)

Anyhow, with your current score your range of schools will be about in the 20-40 range. I know it's a big range, but you do want to pick for yourself a good spread of schools within this range. As far as WHICH school... honestly you could get a good IT Consulting job from most of these schools. Location is obviously relatively important, as is the school's track record of having sent folks to companies you want to work, but other than that and your personal preferences in terms of location and fit, pretty much most of these schools will help you prepare for these jobs.
