Hi Jon,
I was wondering if I could add myself to the mix for evaluation please - I really appreciate your work and feedback.
Profile:
29 year old Chinese Australian
GMAT: 700 (45Q, 41V) - I know quant is low (had been getting 47-49 in mock exams); this is my third attempt so my preference is not to do it again
Education: Graduated in 2009 with a Bachelor of Commerce - with a finance major - and Bachelor of Laws at University of Sydney (according to Top Universities, ranked 37th globally - not that it means much). GPA is hard to conversion - there's no definitive source - but probably 3.1 or thereabouts, based on my raw score of 70% vs. >80% being equivalent to an A+. I was working pretty much full-time as an investment analyst while studying - I didn't realise how much of an impact GPA has but, hey, you can't rewrite the past.
CFA Charterholder
Professional experience:
For the past 4 years I've been an equities analyst at a large asset management firm (known globally). Without giving too much away, I would say that the firm is in a bucket that includes the likes of, arguably, Fidelity and T. Rowe Price - to give some American flavour. So my work is primarily investment analysis - financial modeling, meeting management/competitors/etc., pitching ideas to portfolio managers. I have also mentored the interns who have come through, primarily of my own volition, and that's something appreciated by the higher-ups.
Before that I worked as an analyst at a boutique asset manager (running the gamut from front to back office tasks). So I've definitely progressed in professional terms.
Extra-curriculars:
Was in charge of marketing for a university club
Lead/keyboardist for a punk/blues band when I had time (I don't have much of that now!)
Currently involved in fundraising for a charity
Goal: analyst at a hedge fund
Target schools:
Columbia (intention is for ED), Booth, LBS
My main concern is the academic aspect, particularly the GPA and GMAT side. My preference is not to re-take the GMAT but stranger things have happened. From a professional standpoint, I'd like to think it's somewhat covered.
Where should I go from here? The sense of the unknown is pretty daunting.
