Hi

Looking to apply In R2/R3 to top 15 B schools in USA.
Indian Male 25
GMAT: 720 (V38 Q49)
GPA: 7.48/10 (branch: CSE) from MIT Manipal

Work Ex: 3 yrs

########################################################################
Internship at Honeywell Aerospace during my last semester at college.
Developed a set of code profiling tools for measuring performance of code written for Flight Management Systems on Boeing Aircrafts. Got an A+ (thus securing a GPA of 9.87 in my final semester).

2 Years with Accenture as Software Engineering Analyst (IT Consulting)
Worked with a European Financial Conglomerate developing an insurance application. Interacted with BAs and on site counterparts to refine requirements, build logic, do proof of concepts and eventually write code. Also wrote documents such as the Unit Test Case Document and the Technical Design Document.
Was promoted with the highest possible rating (CSAPG).

1 Year with a multimillion dollar VC backed healthcare startup as Senior Analyst (Healthcare) - Current
The startup is the largest e-commerce platform in the healthcare segment in the country, with financial backing from a few very reputed VCs.
Was the first analyst here and was therefore tasked with implementing initial reporting for the organization. Have architected and implemented the current analytics stack, which has evolved with the growth of the organization - from a simple set of spreadsheets to an open source reporting tool (BIRT) to an end to end big data system handling data from multiple data sources and atop which sits a highly evolved BI tool.
Involved in interviewing potential new team members.
Current work: Mining data to uncover the potential issues that might be present in logistics, data, product and marketing by creating segments, funnels and performing cohort analysis. Also responsible for maintaining the analytics stack, though I'm handing over that responsibility to get into core data analysis.

Volunteering:
########################################################################
13 months as a CRY Volunteer - Current
- Leading a 6-month long photography initiative undertaken by CRY and sponsored by RICOH, which involves handpicking from a low income community,10 children, who show an aptitude for photography and training them on a DSLR, with post-editing using Adobe Lightroom.
- Planned & currently implementing a curriculum in English grammar, reading and writing skills for underprivileged students of IXth and Xth standard as a part of community development program in Dakshinpuri, New Delhi. Also assist other volunteers in implementing Math and Computers curriculum for students ranging from standard IVth - Xth.
- Redesigned and maintain the CRY North Volunteers blog. Occasionally blog there about the events and happenings at CRY as an admin.
- Created and maintain (admin) the official Facebook page for CRY North Volunteers.
- Participate in flash mobs, national-level survey collections and awareness campaigns.
########################################################################

Post MBA concentration: analytics/social entrepreneurship

I have done next to no research on the schools I should apply to. I know that UNC Kenan Flagler has a center for sustainable research and I read about Buzz Rides - a successful sustainable venture born out of that school.

I'll be able to get good recos from my lead (Tepper Grad), the senior manager at CRY and hopefully an average reco from the CEO of my current company (Stanford/IITD Grad).

Here are my questions:
1) Given that I'd like to apply this year, re-taking the GMAT worth it if i can improve my score by 20 points?
2) Do I realistically stand a chance in a top 15 school with my current/improved score?
3) What schools do you suggest I apply to?
4) What more can I do to improve my profile?

hey dude,
Let's start with your questions:
1. Nope. You don't have time for it. And with a 720, at this point, you're in pretty good shape there. What needs work is your applications.
2. You have a pretty nice profile. Let's expand that to Top 20 and say yes :)
3. You gotta choose them dude, but make sure there's a good spread in the Top 20: Say Stanford, Haas, Tepper, Mccombs, Anderson, NYU, Gerogia Tech (as a safe). something more or less like that, that has 1-2 dream schools, 2-4 mid-range schools, and 1-2 safe schools
4. Right now? Research those schools! And write those essays! It takes a looooooong time to do this right, so get started!

and if you need any assistance with it, just drop us a line: https://bit.ly/mbafcGC

Best,
JF

Hey Jon

Your reply has been a morale booster for me since I didn't think I have a decent shot at a top 15 school with my GMAT and GPA. My worry is that given I'm an Indian male in tech, I'd face stiff competition. This is whats prompting me to retake the GMAT.

I was planning to retake the GMAT by Oct 10. This would leave me a good 2-2.5 months to research schools and write those essays. I know the duration not ideal, but I wonder if its too little?

Hey, Well neither your GMAT or your GPA are particularly low. I wouldn't suggest applying to Top 5 schools, because they really almost exclusively take folks from IITs, (and this in my opinion is your biggest weakness, your UG school).

Honestly you CAN retake the GMAT, but once again I'm not sure that getting 20 more points will make a huge difference. At this point what will make a huge difference is your stories. And if instead of prepping for that GMAT, you can add another 2-3 schools to apply to, it would probably have a greater overall effect.

Hope this helps!

Best,
JF

Hey Jon

I re-took the GMAT and scored a 750 (Q49 V41).

Had a couple of questions:

1) Do you think I have a realistic chance at schools like Haas, Tuck, Duke etc.? Also, with the improved score, what do you think my safety school should be.
2) I'm planning to pick an admission consultancy for helping me with my applications and for that, I wanted to avail your free consultation session. But when I click on free consultation on your site, the yellow circular loading bar keeps dancing forever. How do I get around this? (tried on both chrome and firefox)

Hey dude,
Well 30 points helps!. Like I wrote in my last post, I don't know if it's a game-changer... but every little bit is welcome.

Gotta get that checked out.. but the easiest way is to drop Lauren a line, and tell her I sent you: [email protected]

She'll hook you up.
:)
Best,
Jon
