Hello, I'm a relatively recent Engineering graduate (2018) from India. I've been working in the IT sector for over a year now and I'm aware that the Indian IT male is heavily over-represented when it comes to business school admissions. I intend to be an entrepreneur in the near future and as the first step, I'm planning on launching a small business on the side soon. Furthermore, I'm planning on switching from the IT sector to startups where I can gain valuable experience for entrepreneurship. I can work comfortably in the most departments with some of them being:
I have the following questions:
- Marketing and Sales
- Business Development/Product Development
- Designing
I have the following questions:
- Is there a department which will help to make the work experience look more attractive (compared to the usual crowd) during MBA application? Is there a general trend?
- Does the startup domain matter? For example, will work experience in a mechanical/manufacturing startup be more attractive to the AdCom than a SaaS startup or vice-versa?
- Will my experience in running a small-scale business count during admissions?

As far as the GMAT is concerned, I would highly recommend that you take the test early so that you have one less thing to worry about. Some times, people take more than anticipated time to prepare for the test.
1. No, there is no general trend that you must abide by in order to make your profile appear more attractive. Ultimately, it's the story you tell that matters.
2. Start-up work experience is always attractive because it shows a plethora of talent and skill-set.
3. Absolutely yes, your experience in running a small-scale business will definitely count and will provide you will better brownie points.
That said, I would advise you to post your complete profile, including undergrad score, target GMAT score, target schools, extra curriculum, among others, in the profile review section.

Regarding your first two questions, the single overarching thing that matters most is that you pursue and build upon your personal strengths and interests, regardless of what department or startup sector that leads you to join. Far and away, in our decade-plus of experience advising MBA applicants, we've found that AdComs are drawn to candidates who clearly express authentic passion for whatever work they do -- when it's real, it shines through in the essays, the letters of recommendation, and even in the resume to an extent. Rather than asking what department or sector you ought to join to maximize your chances of MBA admission a few years from now, your point of departure should be: "What department do I think I would really thrive in, based on my skills and my talents? What startup sector most intrigues me and offers the most growth potential in my opinion?"
Regarding your third question, absolutely, any experience managing a business (whether it's a side business of your own or a business unit within a company where you're employed) will be viewed as very valuable by AdComs. Anything that provides evidence of your ability as a promising future business leader will boost your chances of admission! Moreover, enthusiasm, persistence, and resourcefulness are all qualities that AdComs value, so starting your own business is a great way to demonstrate that you have those qualities in spades.
