Hi MP999,

I certainly understand your goal of trying to obtain a scholarship! You should absolutely pursue it, but it's important to simply manage your expectations. I think you put your finger on the key factor in your friend's case -- the school was not highly ranked and therefore needed to provide extra enticement to attract high-potential students. Without knowing any other details about your friend, I would imagine that his 770 GMAT score did definitely help, but I doubt that that was the only reason why he received the scholarship. Most likely there were other considerations that the school found attractive about your friend's profile as well. The GMAT score is only one dimension of a multi-faceted application, so while it matters, it will rarely make or break an admissions decision, let alone a scholarship decision.

If a scholarship is very important to you, I would suggest you broaden your target schools outside the top 50. As in your friend's case, you'll have a higher probability of obtaining financial assistance at a lower-ranked school.

I hope that gives you a clearer picture to work with! If you'd like additional guidance, please feel free to reach out to us at www.admissionado.com, and we'd be happy to set up a free consultation to discuss your specific case.

Best,

Doris

Hi Sidbee27,

Thanks for sending us your profile!

Of course, you have an excellent GMAT score, which is certainly a plus. Beyond that, however, I would want to know a few more things about you in order to recommend schools where you'd be a competitive applicant:

-What university did you attend for your undergraduate degree? The Indian / male / engineer demographic is an extremely competitive one. While your GMAT is outstanding, admissions committees (AdComs) will also care about the prestige of your undergraduate institution as well as how strong your GPA and coursework were.

-Coming from a family business can be a plus in the sense that it's less common than, say, finance or consulting backgrounds. However, AdComs will be looking to see evidence of the impact that you've had on the family business -- what has changed about the business since you began working there? What initiatives have you led? How much has the business grown, and in what ways, since you joined? The key is to demonstrate the value that you've directly contributed to the company, ideally in quantifiable terms. You'll also want to make sure you can provide at least 2 letters of recommendation from supervisors (or senior clients or outside partners) who are not related to you.

-What are your plans post-graduation, both immediately and over the longer term (10+ years)? Do you expect to return to your family business right away, or do you expect to seek other employment elsewhere first? Why do you think getting an MBA now will help you on your career path?

All of these factors will determine how competitive you'll be, and at which schools. If you'd like to dig in deeper, feel free to reach out to us at https://www.admissionado.com, and we'd be happy to schedule a free consultation to discuss your specific case.

Best,

Doris
