Thanks for reaching out and welcome to GMATClub! See our responses to your questions below:
Q: If I were to get a job in business development or marketing pre-MBA, would I have a chance at getting into these schools? I have heard that most MBA students come from finance, consulting, and strategy backgrounds.
A: Absolutely. Yes, while many come from finance, consulting and strategy, there are many who also come from business development and marketing. In fact, taking the "road less traveled" could actually work in your favor since you wouldn't be directly compared with others in those highly competitive industries.
Q: Would I have to show serious leadership to set my application apart from the rest?
A: Yes, leadership is very important. I'm not sure what you mean by "serious" leadership, but you should take on roles and have an impact at work and in your non-work communities.
Q: Would I have to work at a large, brand company?
A: No, that's not a requisite at all. It's more about your role, job duties and accomplishments that defines your candidacy. Having a brand name company on your resume can help in other ways (recognition, resources, etc.) but it's not at all necessary.
