I am a new gmatclub member, hoping for some advice!
A little about me: I'm a 21-year old Asian female. I graduated from University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign a year ago with a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in Business. I had a GPA of 3.89. Right now, I am working as a faculty partnership officer at a university in Hong Kong (have been in the role for nearly 8 months). I help form partnerships with other academic institutions and draft proposals and reports for processing.
However, I want to get an MBA sometime in the next few years to jumpstart my career in business. I'm thinking of maybe starting my own business later in the future and believe an MBA would also give me the necessary business skills I need to be successful. I also know that I want to apply to top programs such as Kellogg, Wharton, etc.
My question is: If I were to get a job in business development or marketing pre-MBA, would I have a chance at getting into these schools? I have heard that most MBA students come from finance, consulting, and strategy backgrounds. Would I have to show serious leadership to set my application apart from the rest? Would I have to work at a large, brand company?
I have a GMAT score of 720. Since the score expires in five years, I want to apply for an MBA before then.

A: Absolutely. Yes, while many come from finance, consulting and strategy, there are many who also come from business development and marketing. In fact, taking the "road less traveled" could actually work in your favor since you wouldn't be directly compared with others in those highly competitive industries.
Q: Would I have to show serious leadership to set my application apart from the rest?
A: Yes, leadership is very important. I'm not sure what you mean by "serious" leadership, but you should take on roles and have an impact at work and in your non-work communities.
Q: Would I have to work at a large, brand company?
A: No, that's not a requisite at all. It's more about your role, job duties and accomplishments that defines your candidacy. Having a brand name company on your resume can help in other ways (recognition, resources, etc.) but it's not at all necessary.
If you are interested in our mentorship program, we offer something called the Advanced Planning Program. It might be perfect for someone such as yourself who is looking at an MBA in a few years. You could benefit from a few coaching sessions with some of our esteemed colleagues to help lay out a roadmap so you are best prepared for when you do apply.
