Hi!
I am planning to apply for a deferred MBA this cycle. Since I did a gap year between my bachelors and my masters, many M7 confirmed that I won’t be eligible to apply for their deferred options. However, MIT Sloan was one of the notable exceptions and therefore emerged as one of my only hopes…
Ethnographics: 24, White, Male, Austrian, 2nd Gen University, LGBTQ+
Educational Background:
- BS in Business and Economics, Major in Business Administration, GPA 3.99, Vienna University of Economics and Business (Best Econ/Business University in Austria, Top 50-100 Worldwide). Ranked first in cohort of roughly 3k students.
- MS in Economics at Vienna University of Economics and Business, GPA 4.00, currently also ranked 1st in cohort of 70, graduation planned for September 24
- Exchange Semester (MS level) at Tilburg University (Top 3 in the Netherlands in Economics, Top 20 in Europe), GPA also 4.00
GRE / TOEFL:
- On Track / aiming for a quant and verb score of roughly 165 to be in line with M7 school requirements
- TOEFL 116/120
Work and Leadership Experience:
- 1 year as a Sales Expert in local Apple Store before starting university
- Gap Year between Bachelor and Masters: Internships in Audit (Big4), Mid-Cap Private Equity, Boutique Strategy Consulting and at the Austrian Embassy in Washington, DC
- Gained Leadership experience by working as a Founders Associate (part-time) at a sustainability startup during the first year of my masters degree. Worked with CEO/COO/CFO and jointly managed mainly fund raising, restructuring activities during cost cutting, sales planning and launched a industry (interest) alliance,
- Applied for consulting roles and got an offer for an internship at MBB this summer
Extracurriculars:
- Passionate hobby cook: did voluntary internship in two awarded restaurants, of which one has a Michelin star and is one of the 5 best vegan/vegetarian restaurants in the world
- 1 Year Tutoring for 140 first year students at my university
- Voluntary Internship at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce in Tokyo, 2 months in Jan-Feb 2024
- 1 year extracurricular diploma course organized jointly by UN and Austrian Foreign ministry (also next to my masters degree): The course featured great networking opportunities with peers from different fields of study and we hosted several high-ranking corporate and political persons.
Goals after MBA:
- Either continue consulting or look at opportunities in VC / accelerators to fund and support sustainability focussed start ups
Overall Strengths / Weaknesses:
+ top-notch academic record
+ internship offer at MBB for summer 2024
+ strong interest in the interplay of public administration, economics, sustainability issues and business
+ a lot of international and intercultural experience: lived in Vienna, Hamburg, Washington, Netherlands and Tokyo in the last 3 years
- lack of stronger extracurriculars (e.g. student clubs or consultancies -> I rather preferred real work experience through internships as you can see)
- could have aimed for a more accredited university after undergrad for my masters
- too many internships? (may signal insecurity)
I have the following questions:
Do you think, given my profile, I have a shot at applying to MIT?
Would it be more wise to wait 2-3 years and go through the normal application process?
I am planning to take the GRE anyhow in the next couple of weeks, since I do not want to study for it while working full-time. Therefore, I figured it might be worth a shot applying to the deferred option at MIT, even though my chances might be very slim. Still, I really appreciate your comments and insights!
Cheers!
