Hi everyone,

While browsing through the forums I saw that you can rationalise a low GPA and backlogs. How can you do this? Does it help to have a good GRE/GMAT score along with a continuous work experience?

I have a low (6.03 CGPA) from a reputed university in B.Pharmacy along with backlogs. However I have over 6 years of work experience as a Quality Assurance Manager with a few good projects under my belt. I am also doing a Masters program simultaneously. Any advice on how to get into top b-schools with these qualifications?

Ashura999  hope you are doing great. I have listed tested strategies for overcoming a low GPA, you can find them all here.

Winning Strategies To Overcome Low GPA in B School Applications : Columbia (gmatclub.com)

Specific to your case, you may want to utilise the optional essay/s to explain poor academics. The worst a candidate can do is to not show an awareness about the low academics in the application. You can read here how you should do some damage control in the optional essays.

Hmmm, then that seems to be a low GPA even by your university standards. Yes, an overall good GMAT score (especially a high one) can make up for a good argument suggesting that your academically capable and it's a matter of a few circumstances that led to your low GPA. I would say focus on the other aspects of your profile - the good ones and yes, target getting a very good GMAT score as that is one controllable in this situation.

I had health reasons because of which I had to take a break and go back to college. After clearing my health issues, I got pretty much straight A's. Can I add this as a rationale for low grades in my explanation?

Hi there,

Having a low CGPA (like 6.03) and backlogs can be a challenge, but it’s not the end of the road for getting into top B-schools. A strong GRE/GMAT score can definitely help offset a lower GPA by showcasing your academic potential. Your 6+ years of work experience as a Quality Assurance Manager, especially with significant projects, is a big plus. Highlighting your professional achievements, leadership skills, and any promotions can strengthen your application. Completing a Master’s program alongside work shows dedication and multitasking abilities.

Also, consider converting your CGPA to a percentage format. Many universities use different grading systems, and presenting your CGPA as a percentage could provide a clearer picture of your academic performance. The common conversion formula is:

Percentage
=
(
CGPA

0.75
)
×
10.
Percentage=(CGPA−0.75)×10.
This might present your academic record more favorably.

Make sure to focus on crafting strong essays and getting great recommendation letters to further emphasize your strengths!

Best of luck!
