Question

Hi,

Could you please evaluate my profile.

Indian Male - Engineer- 6 yrs work experience in IT industry- Service and Product firms

1)Work Experience : I have 6 years of experience in IT sector. In my 6 years work experience I have worked with leading Service and Product firms as an SAP Consultant. I have worked client side in Canada for a retail client and have worked as an onshore-offshore coordinator. Also, I have worked in a lead role in a leading Product based firm and led a team of close to 10 people. I am currently leading a small team and have good experience of coordinating with teams across various geographies.

2) Gmat : 700 , IR - 5 , AWA - awaiting result.

3) College info:
VTU, Bangalore- BE Telecom Graduated in 2008 
(78%)- Topped the class

4) Extra Curricular activities:
Volunteer in NGO’s for teaching kids
Active in Sports. Led a football team in college and also was regularly part of Basketball and football team
Anchored many programs in college and was a regular in most event organizing teams

5) Important Certifications (CFA, CPA, FSA, or CA): NO

6) Target Programs :

Looking for suggestions to other programs

7) Application cycle: R1 – 2015 batch

8) Post MBA Goal: (posting a crisp goal)
Get into Product management role in top product firms such as Google,Facebook, Microsoft etc.

Could you please suggest some other good programs for my profile. I am looking for a program with a duration of 12-16 months. Also, would Emory 1 year program be a good fit for my profile considering it would not include an internship.

Hello, Thanks for your post. So there are a lot of Indian male engineering/IT applicants.... be sure to differentiate yourself from your peers in that group as much as you are able to. For example, your international experience and the fact that have a lot of team-lead experience are two plusses vs an average engineer. Think also about what you think makes you different or unique-- in terms of experiences, character traits, personality, skills, you name it. And aim to really showcase the non-technical side of you since technical skills are already quite evident.

When you say would Emory be a good fit given you don't have an internship... are you indicating that you would prefer an internship or not needed? Not sure I'm completely following your question there; certainly an internship can be useful if you feel you could use exposure and experience to specific industries or roles. 12 month programs sometimes do not include internships (though many do). For your IT focus which sounds like it will continue in the future, you could look at Tepper, McCombs, Eller, Kelley, Goizueta. There's also other global schools like IE, ESADE, AGSM and others. Hi Jen,

Thank you for your response and appreciate your feedback on my profile.

My preference is to get back to industry soon and I was wondering if the Goizueta MBA (1 year) would be a good fit for an international student like me and if students get into product organizations post MBA.

Also, of the schools you have mentioned can you let me know where I stand a reasonable chance of getting a good scholarship. While I understand that scholarships depend on various factors I would just like to know where my chances are good. I can afford US schools only if I get a good scholarship.

Hi there,

The more you feel you know what you want right after graduating, and the more certain you are of that potential role/opportunity, the better a one-year option can be. But of course 2 year is very common particularly in the US. In terms of hiring statistics, you can view them on each school's website to see where grads go including what companies, and that can be very helpful info to review. As for scholarships, I think based on what you've shared thus far, it might be tough... scholarships are generally for the very top students; most b-school students end up financing the cost themselves and/or with low-interest rate educational loans paid back by their post-MBA salaries. If you applied to schools outside say the top 30+, there might be better chances... basically the more you rise to the top of the class the better the chance, and you'd also need to apply early.
