Hi ,
I am an Engineer (Electronics) (Indian , Male) whose chose to move into the IT field .
Work Profile :
I have overall 7 years of workex.
I was quite good at coding and software development , however , i realized that I actually was more interested in the domain aspect of things. I was a part time trader , and this helped me improve my knowledge in the domain of Finance. I thus transitioned from a software developer to a Business Analyst.
I work for a major Investment Bank now and have worked in Singapore for a year (international Experience) . I am currently leading a team of 5 on the project side and have 2 junior BAs (MBAs) reporting to me on the domain side.
GMAT :
I took the gamt and on my first attempt got 710 (V38 , Q 49 , IR 6, AWA 4) . Do you think I need another shot at this ?
I also have a FRM certification.
Extra - Curriculars
- I am an investor and maintain a portfolio of stocks for myself and my family members.
- I play a lot of football for leisure.
- I also play computer games and chess .
Dream Schools
Stanford , Wharton , Booth , Kellog
Target Schools
Insead , London Business School , Ross , Duke Fuqua , Tepper , Columbia.
Post B school
I am quite keen on working for a Investment Bank , however general management also intrigues me . Strategy happens to be one of the majors I intend to take .
Can you please
a) help me understand , what kind of courses/electives are needed for general management and what sort of profiles can I expect for general management- placements .
b) help me identify schools which are renowned for General Management.
c) Do you think I have a shot at the schools mentioned above ?
d) Will my lack of traditional extra curricular ( read NGO , Startups , musical bands ) hamper my selection ?
e) Which schools are more scholarship friendly
f) With the existing immigration issues in UK , Is LBS a good bet ?

As I'm sure you know, male engineers from India is a very competitive demographic. But I see your profile as a bit differentiated because a) you made a transition from a very technical engineering role to an analyst role, b) you have experience leading a team, and c) you have work experience outside India.
You don't mention anything about your undergraduate grades / GPA - how did you do compared to your peers? If those are strong then it's less important to have a very high GMAT. A 710 is a great score, don't get me wrong, but your dream schools have averages in the 720s and 730s. So it may not hurt to retake, especially if you were scoring higher on practice tests.
Your extracurriculars don't seem stellar and it's probably too late to add anything on if you're applying this year. But you can still demonstrate that you're an interesting / multidimensional person by talking about things like helping your family members manage their finances. But I still think that could be a potential weak point.
I would encourage you (at least for the application process) to decide on a post-MBA career path and be specific about where you intend to go. Aim to have goals that are logical / connected to your current skills but are also challenging.
Take a look at your target schools career placement stats to answer some of your questions about general management placements and also to check stats on LBS placements. Each school should also publish their requirements for the general management concentration (this differs slightly by school). As far as schools known for general management, the schools most often talked about here include HBS and Stanford (though these are extremely competitive), Tuck, Duke, Ross, Darden, and Kellogg. But I think you can find great general management programs outside the top 10 too. Check out UT McCombs too - they have the largest student run investment fun which may be appealing to your interests there.
