This is Kushagra Pandey this side.
This is my brief profile:
Btech NIT Rourkela(top 10 engineering college in India)
graduate percentage 69.3
10th 91.7,
12th 88.6
Worked for 18 months at Samsung Research India as an Android Developer.
Worked on flagship models like S3 and Note2.
Here comes the twist, I have always been very active in sports.
So after I gathered enough money I left my job to pursue my passion for sports(hope that this doesnt kill my chance).
After I left my job, I joined Sports Authority Of India(the official body for sports in India and I have a letter from the head coach as a proof) and trained for football and played for local clubs and tried to play at a professional level(coudlnt make it though).
I am a muay thai kickboxer, two time national player with a bronze and a silver medal.
I am in the contention to represent India at IFMA Muay Thai World Championships but I am too occupied with my GMAT preparation so have to give up that dream.
I worked for a short duration as a business developer with a new ,first of its kind initiative in India trainnrun whereby people would be transformed from smokers to marathoners.
Extra Curricular:
represented my INstitute at national level tournaments in football.
district level swimmer(though i dont have the certificate as a proof)
very active in the artform of freestyle football(videos as testimonials)
planning of joining an NGO in the future.
Post MBA I would want to work towards the betterment of sport in India and to make it professional.
Create A system which can produce a Buakaw or a Cristiano Ronaldo(the biggest inspiration for me)
How good a chance do I have at getting into a good B School?
Note: I havent appeared for GMAT but m leaving no stone unturned for it.
My Dream B school would be a Stanford or a Yale but I want to know where can I end up.
Please reply!!!

Hi there, thanks for posting here. I think your athletic experiences can help to differentiate you - I'm certain you have plenty of examples of overcoming challenges and achieving goals. I think it will be important to demonstrate that you've reflected on the choice you made to pursue that path and what you learned about yourself by doing so. It will also be important to link that experience to the business world - for example, what skills did you gain that could transfer to a business setting? How will that expeience help with your long-term goals? I think there's an interesting story there! On your goals, I'd aim to be more specific - I'm not exactly sure what you mean by "betterment of sport" and whether that's a realistic post-MBA goal. What type of role do you see yourself in or what kind of orgnizations would be good fits? More specifics here will help a lot!
Other than that I'd say the GMAT is the big unknown...especially since your university grades seem OK, I think a strong GMAT score will be important for you. Hopefully you have a solid plan in place for your prep!
As for schools, it's tough to say without knowing your GMAT, but I'd aim for a range with something like Yale as a reach and then some safer schools. Stanford is the most competitive school so just know that if you do apply, it's a big risk, it is for pretty much everyone! Perhaps take a look at programs that have courses in sports management?

By taking up sports , I developed alot of qualities like teamwork, discipline and ability to take up failure and keep on working hard. By taking up combat sport like muay thai I was able to overcome my fear(of getting beaten up) and face an opponent in the ring which can transfer to a real life scenario of overcoming ones fear.
I am sorry as I was very generic about the way I mentioned my post MBA plans.
I would like to use my MBA knowledge to create an enterprise which creates a sporting infrastructure which is profitable for everyone. For example Lalit Modi creating the concept of IPL, the barclays Premiere League are very strong examples of shrewd marketing strategies and intelligent number crunching. Moreover to create a professional setup (that is sport plus buiness), an MBA with international exposure will be the right path. It is not just sport management, it is a whole business initiative involving various aspects related to business
I will try to get a strong recommendation from a gazetted officer in India.
As for my GMAT I am giving it my best attempt but it would be great if I can get a score to aim at , a score which would be competitive!!!!

. I'd think some more about the specific timing - will you start this venture immediately after business school? I'm not saying it's not possible but schools could see this as a bit of a risk. Or might it make sense to seek an immediate post-MBA position in something like marketing or strategy for a professional sports league? I know leagues like the NHL and NBA higher MBA grads in the US. Just some food for thought! Perhaps take a look at employment reports for your target schools to see the types of roles / organizations MBAs go to.
