Hi,
I am Mechanical engineer working with the PM function of a major automobile company in India for 2 years now. i plan to apply for MBA in this year for admission in 2016. My profile is as follows:
GMAT : Q50,V41,760..IR-5
Academics: Xth: 91.2 %, XIIth: 86.5 %, Grad: 8.6/10
Have been working with the PM department of R&D of a major automobile company. Have managed a number of projects in a number of phases, have plenty to talk about in this regard.
Extra Curricular: Have received awards and scholarships in many national level quiz competitions whilst in school. Took on a number of technical research projects during mechanical engineering, have been volunteering with a local group in Pune.
I was planning to apply to following colleges. Could anyone let me know how good my chances are for applying after just 2 years of work ex? I aim to get into a consultancy firm after my MBA. I was looking at applying to the following colleges
Ross
Kellogg
Red McCombs
UIUC
Stern
I wont be applying to more than 5 colleges as of now, so needed to know a good mix of safe and ambitious colleges. Also, which colleges can i look for to lessen my tuition fee for the same??

Hi there,
Congrats on the strong GMAT score! You will be part of a competitive applicant group as an engineer, and many in that group do score quite high on the GMAT.. so you'll need to try and brainstorm how to stand out from that crowd! It is possible that your profile could be stronger if you did wait another year, IF you feel you'd gain some valuable experience and leadership opportunities within that year. Overall, at top 10 or so schools, the competition is so high, that it is tough even with the GMAT score you have, and it's important to really show what you'll bring to the class that others may not. From your list, Stern & Kellogg are the reaches, as you know. For better chances you may wish to focus outside the top 15 or so; and the less competitive options may provide more opportunities for financial aid/scholarships etc. It can be quite tough to get scholarships for business school, so it's common to finance the degree costs with low-cost educational loans, paid back with post-MBA salaries in many instances.
