I finished up my CFA Charter last year and have been wonder what I want to do next. I have long thought about going back to business school, so hoping to get your thoughts on where I stand...
Undergrad: 3.5 from a non-target big state school with finance major
Work experience: 2 years middle office hedge fund operations, 2 years portfolio construction on major fund-of-funds investment team (think MS, BofA, JPM)
GMAT: Have yet to take, but assume 680-720 (math would be the strongest subject)
Recs: Should be strong. Close connection to HBS and/or Wharton, not sure I have a shot at those two schools though
Misc: CFA Charterholder, Eagle Scout, white male, first college graduate in the family
Post MBA: PE/VC with the hope to one day start my own business
Target Schools: M7, NYU Stern, Yale
Any thoughts on where I stand would be greatly appreciated. Since I have yet to take the GMAT, please advise if I would need a higher score than what is listed.

Hi shutterbug! Congrats on finishing up the CFA.
Your GPA is strong, plus the CFA will boost your academic credentials. A strong GMAT will be important though, and I would aim for a 720 (or ideally higher for M7 schools). Your work experience sounds strong (assuming you can show top performance and leadership) and your goals make sense (though make sure you can show some "backup" for wanting to start your own business someday, and the personality traits that being an entrepreneur requires). The connections to schools via Recs might help slightly but is unlikely to make a huge difference as lots of applicants from your field will have connections to alums of top programs. Depending on where GMAT comes out, I think you could give top schools like Harvard/Wharton a shot. But given how competitive they are, no matter where your GMAT ends up, you should have a range of schools including ones like NYU too.
Having the Eagle Scout and first generation college grad background will be nice boosts to your profile, and should make for a good personal story. Are you still involved with the Scouts today or if not, do you have other community involvement? If not, then I would seek to add an activity soon so you can have at least 6 months involvement when you apply.
