Hi there,
I am starting my applications for the deferred MBA programs as I am graduating from undergrad in May. There is not yet a lot of information on the deferred programs, but I figured I would see if you may have any insight for me. I really appreciate the insight, thank you so much in advance! Below is my profile:
Demographics:
White, female, 22 y/o
Education:
Northeastern University Honors Program Student (5 year program). BS in Bioengineering and a minor in Business Administration. 3.56 GPA.
GMAT (took it twice, this is my second score):
Total: 720
Quant: 44
Verbal: 46
AWA: 6
IR: 8
Work experience:
I have completed 3 full-time co-ops during my undergraduate education (6 months each). The first two were engineering and research based, doing lab work, mechanical testing, systems analysis, etc. My last co-op was at a pharmaceutical consulting firm where I worked extensively with enormous datasets in SQL and Excel doing Market Access analyses, as well as traveling and presenting for clients. I loved my time there and am returning as a full-time Associate in June, following graduation.
Extracurricular activities:
Current VP for the consulting club on campus. I've led a number of initiatives, including the formation of a campus consulting group that works with student start-ups, as well as developed the mentorship program for the organization. I was also formerly the VP of the Biomedical Engineering Society, as well as a member of the fundraising team for Engineering World Health. I have been a Peer Mentor for 1st year students in their introduction to engineering class for the last 4 years. Lastly, I work weekly at the local SPCA as a dog volunteer, and also spend a fair amount of time running (I've run 4 half marathons in the last few years and will be running a marathon next year)
Post-MBA goals:
I am still ironing this out (as it will be potentially 6 years away) but right now I'd like to work in organizational behavior, potentially as an organizational development consultant.
Target schools:
Currently, I am applying to most of the top schools' deferred programs for college students. This includes:
- HBS
- UPenn Wharton
- Columbia
- Chicago Booth
- MIT Sloan
Any specific questions you would like answered by our team:
I know that all of the schools I am applying to are a reach. If not for the deferred program, I probably would not ever apply to them at all. Really, I'd just like to know if there is even a shot of an interview with any of these programs. I haven't been able to find much information on any of them (especially Wharton, as it was only just rolled out to non-Penn undergrads this year), so I feel its worth a shot but would like a second opinion. Also, any insight on my less-than-stellar Quant score is appreciated as well. I know it is very much lacking compared to the rest of my GMAT results, but I am hoping that my engineering background will make up for it. Thank you so much in advance for your insight!!

Thank you for writing! I do think you have a shot at the reach programs, but you're right that it may be a stretch (and, it's a stretch for most everyone - admissions to deferred programs is not only competitive but as we've seen, also unpredictable!) You have a solid GPA in an incredibly tough major, and good campus/outside involvement. Regarding your GMAT score, you're right that the quant score is a bit of a concern - given your major I don't think that schools will doubt your quant ability too much. However, the average GMAT for deferred candidates tends to be 730+, so if you can get to that level while increasing your quant score, that would be beneficial.
I would do some more reflection on your career goal - what has sparked your interest in org. development consulting, and how will the MBA (in combination with your post-college role) help you get there?
