Hi All,
I'm planning to apply for an MBA program in fall 2022, and it would be extremely appreciative to know where I stand with my current profile or any action item that I can take as I have around 1 year before I start applying
Following is my profile on a high level:
Bio: 25, M, Indian
Undergrad:
- B.E. Computer Science from BITS Pilani (a Tier 1 college in India) (2013-2017)
- GPA: 7.92 on a scale of 10
- Extras : No leadership roles, however, been a member of couple of clubs/organization where I had the opportunities to organize a few events and take learning sessions for other students of my college.
Full Time Work Experience:
- 3 years as of now, as a software engineer at FAANG company. (Decent career progress - Have received promotions, Led Projects)
- Extras at current job:
- Have mentored other engineers and interns (Proteges had career advancements like interns getting job offers post internship period)
- Have taken multiple learning series for my co-workers
- Identified and driven multiple process improvements tasks for my team which led to improved productivity
Potential Recommenders: Alumini from top tier business schools whom I've worked closely with in my current organization
Post MBA Goals: Product Management
GMAT: Haven't attempted yet (Potential score: 710-740)
Target Schools: Kellogg, Columbia, Sloan, UCLA, NYU, Ross - any others?
I haven't done any additional volunteer work or community service (Apart from mentoring/teaching at job), how much can this impact my application? Is there any other datapoint I can focus on, within the next year to overcome my lack of experience here.
I have travelled a lot in the past couple years (pre COVID era), although not internationally, with a variety of social groups. Can this datapoint help my application?

You're smart to be planning ahead for your future application and I see a number of things you can do to strengthen your profile. It's hard to evaluate you without your GMAT and some of these below things in play. Right now the schools you have listed seem like a reach given your current profile, but with work on the below, you can improve your chances.
1) Get your test out of the way. While COVID might be hampering test center openings, you can at least start preparing and work to take the test as soon as possible. The scores on the GMAT are good for 5 years, so get this out of the way ASAP. You don't want to be working on essays with the test still to be taken. 710-730 is low for your target schools for someone with a highly competitive cohort of similar applicants, but 740+ will give you more options. You should be aiming for a score that is ideally ABOVE your target schools' averages to be competitive.
2) Step up at work. "Decent career progress" is OK, but not for top programs, so do your best to step up, volunteer to take on challenging roles and go the extra mile. Take on projects where you are leading/initiating/managing/training/coaching and other demanding roles that are more than executing on what someone else gives you to do. Look for things you can make an impact on and improve. And take on support assignments like recruiting, mentoring, or other internal initiatives.
3) Cultivate recommenders. Most B-schools will ask for 2 recommenders, one from your immediate direct supervisor and a second one. Think about whom you might ask - previous bosses, others you report to in some way other than your direct supervisor....keep those relationships positive and check in occasionally. You may need them.
4) Take on some kind of community volunteering or project. There is a lot of need out there right now. If you don't have anything yet, now is a great time to step up. Look for where you will be motivated to really deliver help - either because you care about the cause or it leverages a talent of yours, and go do that! Participation is good, leadership is better. Make a difference.
5) Research schools. It's hard to do a list here without a GMAT and more color on what you are looking for, but at the very least, you should compile schools to apply to that include reach, target and safety options.
Personal travel is not a big help, unless unusual or significant (doing a volunteer initiative somewhere, etc.) but work travel internationally can be helpful--depends on what you're doing, where and for how long.
