I'm looking to apply for an MBA in the not-so-distant future, but one thing on my record haunts me: my lackluster GPA of 3.2 (at a top 20 US undergrad). I owe my mediocre grades to a handful of math classes. Namely, C's in calc2, calc3, number theory, stats. For what it's worth, only calc2 and stats were required for my major (econ), and I took the others out of personal interest.
I heard on an admissions advisory interview that it's sometimes a good idea to take extra math classes while working full-time to show admissions committees that you can handle the quantitative workload. I work in a sub-specialty of software engineering that requires a ton of math, and I've personally improved my skills dramatically. So, I enrolled in linear algebra at a state school and got an A-. I'm thinking of taking some more classes so that hopefully admissions committees will look over my undergrad math grades. And thanks to Covid, I can take these things entirely online without disrupting my work schedule!
Is this even a good idea? And if so, should I retake classes I did poorly in, or enroll in upper-level math classes to show I'm capable?

Yes, this is a great idea! Schools will accept grades from additional coursework you've taken. Many schools look specifically for Stats or Advanced Math like Calc so those would be good ones to take. I think if you have at least two courses under your belt before you apply, that will help. We have a post on our blog related to this: https://www.mbamission.com/blog/2018/06 ... l-courses/
Also don't underestimate the value of a high GMAT or GRE to mitigate a low GPA!

This is extremely helpful, thank you Kate! The blog post link especially is well-written. But just a quick follow-up-- Is it better to simply retake classes, or just take advanced classes in general? For instance: I got a C in calc 3; should I retake calc 3, or enroll in differential equations?
