Hello fellow gmaters!
I am in need of some serious advice. I graduated in 2009 with a BAH(Bachelor Art Honours) Economics from a prestigious university in Canada. The problem is that my undergrad mark is horrible. I failed my first year of undergrad and was on academic suspension for one year. I worked during that one year and returned the year after(3rd year) and rallied and finished the 4 year program in 2- 2.5 years. My mark, in the end, was quite poor since I rushed and took 8+ courses/year while working full time to pay for my tuition.
I graduated, did an internship at a FX trading firm on the trading desk and sales for about half a year, but decided not to stay with the firm. Here's where things took an interesting turn of events.
I decided to become a professional poker player.
I did quite well as a professional poker player making a 6+ figure salary yearly and did exceptionally well in 2012 with world-wide tv appearances and being ranked as one of the top players internationally.
The problem is, I know that business schools look for applicants with unique backgrounds, but poker is still such a taboo and controversial field(with the online poker US BAN etc) I am not sure which schools I can apply to given my undergrad mark and experience.
I want to do a career switch into entrepreneurship since poker is not something I want to do for life. At this point of my life and career, I would like to use the earnings from poker and build something that would be meaningful to me and others. In order to achieve this, I would preferrabily like to attend a good MBA with a solid entrepreneurship program.
Anybody out there with a unique job paths like mine who applied successfully to top mba schools? If so, which schools can I apply to and how did you structure your experience so that you can add 'value' to the class? I understand that poker is not something that promotes team work and structure as I set my own schedule most of the time and it gave me the freedom to travel the world.
As for my GMAT score, I wrote it in 2009(right after graduation) and received a 710(92%), 35 verbal(74%) and 50 quant(94%), 6.0 writing(87%)
* Also, would it help for me to re-write the gmat since it's been 4 years? I am hoping I can put more time into studying verbal in order to achieve an overall GMAT score of 740 +. Would this strengthen my application enough to warrant spending the time and effort spent to study and re-write the GMAT?
