Hello fellow Gmat-clubbers,
I’m really happy that I got accepted to both programs, but I’m honestly torn by the decision. Maybe you guys can help me out a little bit?
Background: 28 years old, Latin American, Management Consulting background (Regional firm), European Passport, speaking Spanish, English and French fluently
Goal: Private Equity/Management Consulting job - I would like to work for a period of 4-5 years and then switch to Social Impact (either Impact Investing or Social Management consulting). I would prefer to live in the US.
On one side, I love Chicago Booth’s culture and worldwide recognition. I believe a 2 year program fits my career expectations perfectly. Unfortunately, the program is pretty expensive and I would need to take a heavy loan to pay for my studies. Additionally, I’ll need to find a job that allows me to repay the loan. There’s no doubt being part of Chicago Booth’s program will help me secure a job that pays well, but I don’t want to come back to Latin America, and I find the H1 visa sponsoring system a little risky (from what I’ve read, with the current cap, there’s about a 70% chance of getting a visa to work in the US, IF I find a sponsor of course).
On the other side, I’m a European Citizen. Joining INSEAD would be a perfect fit in that sense. Beign a recognized school in Europe and Asia, Insead would give me huge possibilities of finding a job in the European zone (speaking Spanish/English/French fluently). I can take my time to look for a job that fits my needs without being scared of getting kicked out of the country, and also I won’t have a huge loan on my back because the program is far less expensive and I got a scholarship for 16% of the tuition. However, I’m not 100% convinced that a 1 year MBA program without an internship fits my needs. Also, the current European economic situation is not that good and it might take some time for things to get better there, which is a risk for finding a well-paying position.
In spite of preferring the USA as location, I wouldn’t mind going to Europe in the short term. It seems that INSEAD’s recognition is limited to the European zone and Asia, making it difficult for me to find a job in the US in the long term. Some people tell me that going to Chicago would be a better choice because I can still look for a job in Europe without losing my chances of securing a position in the US, and that I can’t do the opposite with an INSEAD degree. But I always ask myself “if I go to Booth and focus on getting a job offer in Europe, then wouldn’t it be better to go to Insead and save 1 year worth of tuition and living expenses?”
It is certainly not an easy choice and I’m open to any comments you guys might have.
To sum up:BoothPros:

Visa-related risks for working in the US
INSEADPros:

Thank you!
