I live north of Philly. Work on the border of New York, New Jersey. (yes, long commute) BS in computer science (Temple). 20 years work experience with 10 in management. I am looking for a program to help push me to the next level, network with other business people outside my field and to move up the ladder of course. I do have a great interest in starting my own company within 10 years and will probably specialize in entrepreneurship if able.
Originally looked at an online MBA solution, but everything that I read said the network you build is as important as what you learn. Admitted to Lehigh, Temple waiting on Villanova. Lehigh is the most convenient, and i like that you can take both online and in person classes. Most programs seem one or the other. Also they offer a specialization in Entrepreneurship. Overall, it is inexpensive at 1050 per credit, with 36-45 credits to get your MBA. What I worry about with Lehigh is reputation. Seems hit or miss depending where you look though the school itself is well ranked nationally it seems.
Temple's online seems like a great program, and I am pretty familiar with Temple having done my undergrad from there in my mid 30s. (40 now) But, it is the opposite direction of my current company. In many ways, I think Temple would be the most convenient in terms of schedule, but I worry about lack of networking classroom experience which I think is important. It will end up being about $65 total.
The most unrealistic seems to be Villanova. Farthest to get to. Doesn't honestly really seem to work with you, and the admission staff seems to have so many issues thus far. I have had to recreate my application twice because of IT issues.
I think my best option is Lehigh. In addition to it offering both online and live classrooms, costing less, and being physically more convenient (I commute by it everyday), I think it would also help to have a network outside of Temple since I did my undergrad there. I know when I look over applications, I have a semi-unconscious tendency to discount graduate degrees from same place as undergrad. But hit or miss reputation worries me a bit. Not a lot because it is still a good school. but a little.
I should also mention that I found it interesting that one of the directors at Temple just left to go to Lehigh instead. I noticed it online thinking, "I talked to this person at Temple."
