Hi!
I'm an American who has lived in the UK for seven years working in marketing and advertising. Though I did my undergrad at U Penn. As I never did any time in consulting or finance I'm keen to get an MBA to give me a solid foundation in business acumen that I can use to round out my experience and transfer into broader business strategy for a company like Airbnb, Nest, Uber, etc. While I do see myself potentially living in the states for a few years (5?) after graduation for family reasons, ultimately I see myself having an international role. Even if I'm based in the US I'd like to be working in an international capacity, by helping the business I'm working for expand internationally, etc. Or I would love to live abroad again either in London or somewhere new!
I've recently received an offer at INSEAD for 16D and am questioning if I should take it. I'm on the older side of MBA students (will be 31 soon) so I like that it's one year and a great ROI. I like the fact that there are multiple campuses so I could spend time in Asia as I don't have any experience here. And I like the focus on languages and international diversity. It is a unique program that I feel will round out my international experience and make me standout in this capacity.
However, my concerns are the lack of brand name in the states and that the career services isn't known for being top notch. Feels like the school's statistics benefit from lots of its students being sponsored by their consulting firms so essentially just going back to another great, high-paying job. I'm also concerned that I won't have enough time to gain the experience I need to be seriously considered for the roles I'm looking at.
Help! What do you guys think? From the start I wanted to go to INSEAD but now I worry that I'm making the wrong choice. If I applied to any other schools in the second round I'd have to give up my space at INSEAD.

Looking at your goals of staying international - Insead seems like a good option. But I doubt that Insead will open doors in predominantly American based new internet companies such as Airbnb, Uber, and Nest. In the US, the Insead brand name just isn't as strong as any other top school from the US. Also, you're absolutely spot on on the time to gain the experience. Insead is a great option for people looking towards management consulting and core established industry outside of the US. You can take the management consulting route into these technology companies.
For R2, I would recommend that you look at the 1 year MBA program at Kellogg. There are other 1 year MBA programs in the US as well (Johnson, Marshal, etc), but these will not be a significant improvement over Insead. Also, if you can deffer from Insead for a year, look at the J-Term intake at CBS. Its a 16 month course without an internship that may prove relatively better than Insead in helping you find employment with the leading Tech firms.
For R2, I would recommend that you look at the 1 year MBA program at Kellogg. **BIASED OPINION**
Though my background is different, I have somehow similar goals than yours. I think that the thought that INSEAD is not as strong in the US is partially true, I have already landed an internship for a US based VC for the next summer, and am an INSEAD admit. I think you do have to network more, have more logistic expenses to interview, etc, but INSEAD is a recognized brand by people who hire. It is true that it will not have the wow factor that HBS has in a dive bar in California with a random girl, but I doubt anyone goes to Business School to get that. I assure you the companies who hire know INSEAD.
Having said that, you should try to go to the admits weekend this friday, you'll be surprised by the amount of Googlers, Uber guys, etc that are a part of the class. I think you have a huge advantage over guys like me: you're american and you won't need a Visa to return, so I would definitely go to INSEAD, you'll get the job you want, and I think you have a big advantage vs US Schools, that is that you'll have a truly broad network in virtually any country of the world, with the most tight knit community in the business, hands down. I think that is what made me go for INSEAD.
On the career services, the only thing INSEAD has a disadvantage, is that the French government doesn't issue a working Visa, so staying in the EU except UK might be hard. But you can land a job in the UK, US, UAE, Asia, and there you have an huge advantage.
