Hello everyone,
My deposit deadlines are coming up quick. I need some assistance/advice in selecting a program to attend. Any insights are appreciated!
Background: 28 year old male, US citizen, 5 years of work experience in financial services
Post-MBA Goal: Transition into an equity/fixed income research role at a big investment management firm. I'd like to avoid the bulge bracket investment banks that offer roles in their research/asset management divisions if possible. Preferably, I want to end up at a firm like Wellington Management, MFS, Manulife, PIMCO, etc. I understand Boston is a big hub for investment management roles on the east coast and I'm open to ending up there post-MBA.
Generally, I've had a tough time locating statistics on investment management job placements at each of the three universities. It seems that very few MBAs recruit for these positions compared to IB/consulting. My thoughts on each school:
Cornell:Biggest global brand value even though Darden might rank better
Ivey League
Not thrilled about living in Ithaca (not an outdoor person and I hate winter)
IM recruiting trek to Boston
Big alumni network
Student run investment fund
Small scholarship
Emory:Great reputation in the Southeast
Solid consulting/banking placement stats
Get to live in a major city with access to several F500 companies
Wasn't able to find many alumni in prominent investment management roles
Smaller alumni network
Half tuition scholarship
Darden:Big state school that consistently ranks in the 10-13 range (US News)
Seems to place well for investment management roles (Boston trek)
Charlottesville is beautiful as is the UVA campus
Sizeable alumni network
Case method
Student run investment fund
No scholarship
At this point, I'm leaning towards Cornell mainly due to the brand value and global reputation the university enjoys. I would love to hear people's thoughts on which school you would choose and why! Thanks for the help!
