Hi All,
I am struggling between two schools. Hope to get more suggestions here.
Background:
1. Chinese Male (with H1B)
2. Got master degree from a U.S. school and worked in NYC for 4 years
3. Supply chain finance looking to switch into management consulting in the short term, probably PE/VC in long term
4. As an Asian male, I understand it's extremely hard to get management consulting job at MBB either in London or NYC. So location is not my concern, I ended up going back to China mostly
Johnson:
Pro
-Brand name one of Ivy League, especially useful in Asia?
-Current network in NYC, some potential referrals (but not in consulting)
- As I have H1B now, maybe possible to get an management consulting job in US?
Con
- Weaker in consulting or PE/VC (NOT BCG target school)
- checked class of 2019 Chinese internship list no one got into MBB
LBS
Pro
- Decent internship placement for Chinese students (some MBB)
- Different experience for me
Con
- No networking in London
- No brand name for parent school (basically it's a B-school, not many Chinese ppl know)
Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks in advance.
Hi
First Congratulations are in order.
Now, to answer your question keep in mind that I will not compare those schools in general, even that would not be easy at all, I will only compare them in how they align with your story and your goals, meaning what would be eventually best in your (specific) case.
So you want to work for McKinsey & Company, Bain & Company or the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) ?
From Cornell 17% of graduates goes to consulting or 47/282.
For instance, that is higher than Columbia Business School 15%, Stanford 13% or UCLA Anderson 11%.
Now, for year 2015. McKinsey hired 38 people, Bain 15 and BCG 19 from LBS, but at that same year 24% in Consulting Industry came from Cornell.

In 2016.
School Consulting Hires by Industry Median Base Salary Median Sign-On Bonus
London Business School 35.0% $109,942 $40,751
Cornell (Johnson) 25.0% $132,525* $29,362
Here we can see that 10% more came from LBS, but Cornell had higher total salary adjusted for sign in bonus, LBS $150,693 vs. Cornell $161,887.
If I was you I would go for Cornell easily for a few obvious reasons, it is Ivy league, you already have H1B visa so you can work in US/NY area, you already have decent network there that you would expand even more, as you said it is also very strong brand in China which is your second best option after graduation. That would be smart and safe option/decision. But, maybe I am just risk averse and biased toward US/NY

Now, LBS...if you are at point in your life where you would rather try something complete new, living/working and studying in London UK, different culture, slightly different education system, if you are more adventurous guy or eager for a change, if testing yourself there is teasing you, if you are curious about UK/Europe then LBS is great choice.
At this point, you are pretty familiar with US culture in general and education system, also with working environment...so you need to answer is that for you ? Are you satisfied ? Are you happy there ? Does knowing what to expect is what you want or you would rather try something new in order to compare later ?
Have you visited Europe, UK or London before ? Do you have sense what to expect ? Do you already like them ?
Are you sure consulting is the only thing you would go for after graduation ?
Is there a chance you might change mind, adapt, surprise yourself, discover other possibilities during MBA or upon completion ?
Does this make sense to you in order to decide ?
Thanks for your inputs billionaire. Very helpful.
I understand Johnson is a safe choice for me. However, its weakness in consulting bothers me( that's what I heard from one current student)
Do you think I have a chance to land a MBB job in NYC? I am pessimistic.
Compared with 2nd tier firm like EY or PWC in NYC, I prefer MBB in China. Location is not my concern. I don't need to stay in US.
