Just got admitted to INSEAD and Columbia
I list my profile below
Geographical Region: South East Asia
Undergrad Degree: B.E. Computer Engineering
Certification: CFA, CFP®
Experience : 2Y in IT (Model Based System Engineering) and 5Y in Banking (Product Management Role - Investment Products)
I get my sponsorship from my employer. The sponsorship will cover all tuition fee and part of the living expense. The upside is that employer will keep paying my current salary during my time at university. However, after graduation, the binding will be two times the time I spend to do MBA and I need to receive pre-MBA salary&corporate title.
Therefore, there are four options for me
1. Columbia with sponsorship
2. INSEAD with sponsorship
3. Columbia without sponsorship
4. INSEAD without sponsorship
Post MBA: If I take sponsorship and still be with current employer, I will join corporate strategy or wealth customer segment roles. If I do it on my own, my preference is to work in wealth management. The secondary options are corporate finance and business function in big tech firm.
Thanks in advance
Hi,
To start off, I would like to preface this by highlighting that I am a Round 2 applicant for INSEAD 20J. However, rest assured that I will definitely try my best to offer an objective view on the dilemma that you are having.
First and foremost, Congratulations! Both Chicago Booth and INSEAD are top Business schools and I sincerely believe that a MBA from either institution will benefit your future career greatly. That being said, the decision is entirely dependent on how long you want to remain in your sponsoring company as well as the time you want to spend in school.
If you are taking up the sponsorship and aiming to stay in the company in the long run, I would say a 2 year or 4 year bond should not be making a big difference to your decision. If you are aiming to leave the company right after the bond ends, I would say that INSEAD is a better choice since you save a total of 3 years (1 year in school and 2 years in your sponsoring company) and you can make your next career move earlier. Moreover, you will be drawing your post-MBA salary during the second year instead of receiving your pre-MBA salary. However, bear in mind that this means your MBA experience will be shortened by a year (might be a pro or con depending on your own perspective).
That being said, would you prefer your education to be in the States or focused in Europe/Asia? Do you want to be in school for 1 or 2 years? That should give you an idea on which school you prefer. Job hunting would not be an issue since you are sponsored, so the edge that INSEAD brings in that area is not as important in this case. Ultimately, if you feel that 10 months in INSEAD is too intense and you prefer a slower-paced 2 year program, Booth will be a great choice especially if you are impartial to US/Europe/Asia. In the event that you do not mind the higher intensity and are drawn to the amazing culture and diversity offered by the 10-month program, then INSEAD will be the better choice. As a sponsored MBA student, you can even make full use of the opportunity to do an exchange at Wharton in Period 4/5 since you won't need to be in Fonty/Singy for the career fairs. Furthermore, it allows you to rejoin your company and start your post-MBA career earlier.
If you ultimately choose not to take up the sponsorship, I would say INSEAD is the obvious choice. I am a South-East Asian myself and have spoken to multiple alumni and current students in the region. The consensus is that INSEAD has one of the best Career Development Centres and the on-campus recruiting in Period 4/5 will be greatly advantageous if you are looking to land a job in the APAC region. The advantages of being on-site and interacting face-to-face with recruiters and interviewers in the region gives INSEAD the edge over Booth in this regard.
All in all, if you were to take up the sponsorship by your current company, you need to consider if you prefer studying in the States or Europe/Asia as well as decide if you prefer a 1 or 2 year MBA program. It is a good problem to have in choosing between two amazing schools and I sincerely hope I was able to help in one way or another.
Good luck and all the best to you!
