I am very thankful to have a few offers. I would appreciate advice on the options that I have.
As an international student with 4 years of experience in the finance industry, I plan to enter the consulting industry post MBA. My back up plan is to enter an investment bank.
I am indifferent to location/country. The language barrier is not an issue in my case.
I am looking to understand the following areas for the program:
(1) Prestige/ brand value
(2) Career progression and salary for an international student.
(3) Alumni network
(4) Financing/loan burden is an issue for me. So in nutshell, I am trying to figure the total economic value (taking into other externalities into account) for the given options.
Hitotsubashi ICS MBA ($$$$)
Pros:
+ Elite MBA program in Japan. The program is located at the heart of Tokyo. It would put me in the good career trajectory.
+ Recommended for the MEXT scholarship. if accepted, the scholarship will cover everything including living expenses and air travel. I would actually save money.
+ Dual degree program with Yale - for which tuition may need to pay separately in the second year. However, I can apply for a scholarship
+ No Visa issues, better health care, No guns issue, and lower taxes- higher disposable income
Cons:
- Starting salaries in Japan may be lower as compared to the salary in the US.
- The value of an MBA in Japan is still a foreign concept in Japan. But I can throw in dual degree with Yale or an exchange program at London business school/ Kellog/ Darden ? Maybe?
UNC Kenan Flagler ($$$)
Pro:
+ higher average salary than the Japanese MBA program. good career trajectory
+ One of the Top 20 MBA programs in the US.
+ Highest scholarship among US MBA program
+ paid deposit in Round 1 to save the spot. I do not know If I can negotiate anymore?
Cons:
- US Cons:health system, guns, Lottery system......I do not know if I should worry about these!!
- Will have to loan a significant amount
Emory($$)
+ higher average salary than the Japanese MBA program. good career trajectory
+ One of the best programs in the US for consulting.
+ Negotiating scholarships
Cons:
- US Cons:health system, guns, Lottery system......I do not know if I should worry about these!!

Welcome to GMAT Club! You have very unique pros and cons and I definitely like your unique perspective. Here is the good thing, with a few over-hyped exceptions, campuses are very safe, gun-free areas that usually have pretty good healthcare. As an international student you will have to get health insurance. I don't know how it compares to Japan but as long as you don't need many treatments, works quite well despite Bernie's speeches.
Realistically it is a choice between Japan and US. US has a lot of opportunities but can be a confusing and frustrating place for someone from the Japanese culture. I have had one classmate from Japan and he had a bit of a hard time adjusting, in part perhaps since his company was sponsoring his MBA and he never intended to settle in the US, so he did not make an effort. Of course he was a super nice person and a pleasure to be around, but he did not care about being in the United States per se and was waiting for his term to end. If you choose to go to the US, you have to embrace it - the good and the bad. It is a package and you will only succeed if you are all in. Granted, there are many Japanese communities and diverse cultures - it is very easy to coexist and be whatever you want to be (nobody is going to bother you) but to succeed and breakthrough, you have to play by the rules of the US game. Does that make sense? If you are not planning to play, don't both wasting your effort. It won't be enjoyable or productive and no reason to make yourself miserable.
I have had a chance to spend 2 weeks in Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka) and I was blown away by the people, culture, and everything really. Japan has exceeded my expectations but as you mentioned there is a certain path for the MBA and I understand a certain set of rules you have to play by for advancement and career. Long hours and lots of hard work without as much of a credit but security and safety...
As to your career and professional goals - consulting and IBanking are very competitive and hard-to-get into industries. You will have to interview quite a bit - 7 or maybe even more coffee chats, interviews, meetings. Are you extroverted enough to go through that? (it definitely will make you stronger but if you are not comfortable, it will be hard work and likely a frustrating outcome).
P.S. Again, not knowing your particular background and situation, I can't know for sure, but for most, your main cons are not really a concern. Instead, it will come down to culture and your ability to leverage your MBA for employment. Without knowing your comfort level with these, I can't really give you a recommendation. However, keep in mind that UNC is a STEM-mba program that gives you a 3-year work permit after graduation with some hoop jumping but still it is 3 years!
