Yes of course Berkeley is ranked higher but you might want to think about where you want your MBA to take you the connections are you going to need really what it is that you need out of the MBA.??

We shouldn't be thinking about rankings in a blind vacuum but really in context of your goals and your preferences. So it's very possible that having Anderson alumnus around would be more valuable than The Prestige of Cal in your specific situation.

That said, ha, just had 2 entrepreneurship-minded MBAs get into Haas and MMM but they are headed to HBS. If you dont need VC in the future, though, brand might be secondary.

="confidentiality"]Hi, I got into R2 for both schools and contemplating which school to commit to. I saw some old threads but wanted to get input based on my personal details.

Post MBA goals: management consulting. Also considering tech pm

Desired location post MBA: Los Angeles

Current occupation: Presales solutions engineer at a SaaS company. Previously a consulting project lead at the same company.

Cost: Haas (143k) vs Anderson (128k)? Did not receive any scholarships/grants yet. FEMBA seems cheaper. I don't intend to take any loans and pay for tuition on my salary.

Current job is flexible where I can relocate and work anywhere. I work in LA, Westwood. I do like being in the office but it's not required. I am leaning towards FEMBA tues and thurs on this pro alone. This is extremely convenient and I would minimize commuting time if I take a UCLA shuttle after work to get to campus. If Haas, I would try commuting every weekend. Not sure how feasible it is since my Fri and Sat would be shot.

Haas EWMBA has better brand name. But if I want to live in LA afterwards, would it be better to do FEMBA?

How are both programs perceived? Are they considered same tier or is Haas miles better? Especially for tech or consulting?[/quote]

Congrats on getting into both programs. Haas EWMBA is probably one of the most competitive programs so you should definitely be proud of your accomplishment there.

At the same time I don’t feel it makes sense for you to fly to bed area on the weekends though I would tell you that you will definitely have a number of classmates that make that commute every weekend or however often they come up. It’s a slightly different experience when you’re doing it on the weekend then a couple hours after work. You spend the whole day together and you’re fresh and in a different setting so you can focus on the program a lot more and take more out of it. You also have a diff caliber of students that both programs attract.

Either way, both programs are a big commitment and you have to decide between the experience and the lesser of the two evils. It sounds like we’re just logistically Anderson would be a lot easier.

On the recruiting side, neither program is really designed to provide recruiting opportunities but you could potentially crash a few of the full-time events if you are close to the school and able to do meetings and coffee chats. Assuming we still have those things next year with this crazy coronavirus...

Something to keep in mind about management consulting recruiting is that it’s not usually designed for older applicants in the spots they’re trying to fill on campus are for associate level post MBA guys. It can be tougher to recruit if you’re older and have more experience and don’t quite fit in the mold. That may push you towards tech PM roles. I’m not sure how much of that is available in LA. Especially West LA though I think Google, Amazon and FB and everyone has moved their media and entertainment teams to Culver City and Playa. I just don’t know how many roles and with what background are in LA. In my experience most of them are entertainment related.

I would encourage you to look at your recruiting paths and consider what you value more - being in LA or potentially pursuing a certain career path. I am sure there are consulting and PM roles you could get into, I am just talking about probabilities and numbers since I seem to have misplaced my crystal ball somewhere :-o

Hi MBAPrepCoach and bb, thank you for your inputs. Those are all solid recs and going to Anderson would make my life so much easier than having to commute weekly to Haas. Great input!!

I would be 29 when I matriculate and 31 or 32 when I graduate (aiming for 2.5 years in school). Too old for consulting? There's a lot of tech positions in LA and FAANG does recruit from Anderson. Culver City is only much 3-4 miles from westwood. Silicon beach (Santa Monica) only 5-6 miles.
