Emory Goizueta $$$ vs Georgetown McDonough$ vs ISB (No$)

Hi Guys ,

First of all , thank you for all of your support , this community has been the best resource for me and a helping hand while applying for Bschools MBA application.

I'm an international student (Demography- India)
Have been blessed to have received some offer and many great waitlistes 😅 hence the name WLGuY

So my dilemma is as below-
Hope you guys can help me with this ...such that i can make good sound decision.

I have 3 admits
1)ISB - no scholarship , ranked very high and is no 1 school in india
2) McDonough Georgetown - scholarship amount 25k (12.5+12.5) , ranked higher than Emory and Its in DC . (I guess with US news 2022 ranking there is a slip)
3)Emory Goizueta - scholarship amount of 110k (55/annum)

Waitlisted at
usc marshall, Cornell.

My Background is in Procurement and Contracts within oil and gas .
4 years work ex
30 months international

Post MBA career goal - to get into consulting (ops/supply chain or even generalist roles)
Plan B- core operation roles, gen management roles or leadership development program
So, Amazon's pathways is one program which i am really looking forward to applying if Plan A fails.
Also I am open to other roles as well
Frankly speaking being an international , i have to be flexible , so in a exploratory mode .

Long Term- get into senior leadership roles in the supply chain division for big firma in tech, retail or manufacturing.

Location preference- location agnostic.

I am not that into ISB (Hyderabad/Mohali) as its one year program and was a last resort if nothing in US came to fruition.

Can you share your thoughts and can suggest what you feel.....

Fees - for both emory and McDonough is similar 140k(tuition) plus living exp (60K)

At Emory - i will take additional loan for rest of the fee payment and living expenses (80k)
At McDonough-25k minus , so it will be around 200k loan for 2 years including fees and living expenses.

ISB - well 1 year program , 45 lakhs INR (70k usd)
So, have decided to withdraw from isb

I think i can no longer wait for waitlist decision to pan out as there is no guarantee and Visa will be an issue if delayed further.

Have to deposit acceptance fee at emory by 13th april.

And at mcdonough a week later.

I am yet to negotiate, will do so in coming days.(not that optimistic though from Emory as its r2 and already its a huge amt, - do you have any tips).

With McDonough i will try to negotiate with emory's offer and see how it pans out.

I prefer city over remote location so , both are good bt does having a slightly higher ranked school matters that much ??

So , any thoughts on this? If you were in a similar situation what you would have done? Or were you in a similar pinch same as me....if so do comment.

Hi WLGUY007 , as you are deciding between Emory and McDonough certainly consider the location part. DC has a more “open” feel as compared to Atlanta. I lived close to Atlanta for 2 years (did not like it a lot) but loved taking trips to DC which I feel is more diverse and better planned in comparison. Otherwise, there is not much difference between the schools from a league perspective in my humble opinion (would like to hear from experts on this). On a separate note, do bear in mind that if you eventually settle for Plan B (something similar to the Amazon pathways program), you could have had a much better ROI with ISB. All of the ISB applicants that I know from supply chain /ops/proc/ traditional engineering backgrounds at ISB had offers for Pathways. Several folks in my network were able to move to international positions within Amazon. Therefore, I suggest that you have it clear in your mind that you want to go to the US for the experience of it so that you do not end up being disappointed due to the kind of challenges that come with being an international student/ international job applicant. Plan A in the US will be challenging and you may have to compromise and start somewhere to eventually work your way towards your dream companies over the next few years post MBA (Amazon to MBB for example). Also, the opportunity cost for a two-year MBA is higher, not to mention the commitment and focus required in terms of staying far from family (if you do not have any in the States). Let us know which one you go to

I completely agree but ISB being a one year program makes it difficult to transition.

Also have heard that even though the opportunities for supply chain roles are plenty, if purely based on amazon - well they are not that great.
Hardly one or two people are going there.
Pathways is not that popular in India and so the opportunities are rare.

Will definitely think more and more about it.

Please accept my congratulations on your great results. I know it’s annoying to be waitlisted but you have done a good job picking schools over a wide spectrum and that’s good to have a variety of results. I know it makes it difficult… in terms of visa, I believe you can only state your visa appointment 60 days before you have to enter the country and I think that would mean your visa appointment could only be in June. Is it 60 or 30?

I cannot comment about ISB. I’ve heard good things about it but I can’t really comment 😇

Choosing between McDonough and Emery, I think you will be more comfortable at Emory with the generous aid package you received. I don’t feel you would be trading off too much or anything really bye going to Emory. At least for your work in the United States. Georgetown has a famous undergrad and so that would be better recognize internationally but I would be comfortable going to Emory personally. I think it would be easier to borrow money for the tuition with that good of a scholarship and potentially have a lower interest-rate and have more flexibility.

I feel Emory has had better rankings historically than McDonough but I may be biased 🤷‍♂️😬 in any case, I feel they would be close.

Congratulations and good luck!!! I think you will have more options without a big loan and less stress, which will make the process and experience more enjoyable. Keep your expectations low - you are getting a big scholarship so the school is subsidizing you, so if things are not perfect, or if you feel that they should do more (which everyone of us can probably say that we could or should do more too), just remember you are getting an awesome deal. All schools are imperfect so have some grace and patience with them

Now you can start worrying about your place to live, where to stay, tickets, visa, etc - lots of things to work on. Keep in mind that the budgets that schools provide for guidance are only for guidance and you will need more money and the more you can save/store/have in your emergency account, the better. There will be many opportunities for recruiting and leisure trips, etc. Having this scholarship will help to be able to relax a bit and spend some of it without feeling overly guilty. Good luck!

Its Emory Goizueta Business School fir me, makes sense the situation got complicated because of last minute conversion at Tepper, though i am done with my Visa and all so if n only Tepper is generous post negotiation for scholarship will switch or else its all the way Emory Goizueta Business School for my MBA ☺️
T15 vs T22 kind of scary but well when u have decent scholarship and city advantage and plus a rumour of sorts for recession in near future you tend to become risk averse.

Goizueta for me...bt not everything is set in stone and well i am keeping a small gap open -
