Hi. Great job formatting your post. I really appreciate it. It’s a pleasure to see these.
First of all, congratulations on your admits.
Do you have a very interesting situation and collection of background, citizenship and opportunities. This reminds me a bit of myself, I was somewhat all over the place. I came from Europe to the US to go to business school and then I did a semester abroad in Hong Kong… so covering three continents. 🥴
One of the biggest differences and perhaps valuable aspects is an internship. If you are lacking a background that could help you get into M&A, unless you have a pass or connections, an internship would be very helpful to get at least a tiny foothold in the space and get yourself established. I’m not suggesting that getting an internship is super easy, by no means, it’s competitive but at least it gives you another chance of finding an opportunity and getting recruited. It’s a little bit more forgiving and the barriers to an internship much less than a job.
I would also consider if there’s any recruiting pathways or existing roads that have been established from these programs into your target industry. For example, if NUS sends a bunch of people into top finance firms around the world or even just Singapore, that is a big plus because you now have a network of alumni and former students who will be able to help you get the best chance possible and alert you to opportunities.
I would agree with you about language skills in Asia. I’m not sure what language proficiency you have but I even found Hong Kong to be challenging if she did not speak Cantonese. I’m sure now with Beijing taking over Mandarin is much more prevalent but few people spoke Mandarin 15 years ago… also I feel the change in legislative and policy environment in Hong Kong is going to push a lot of the financial companies either to Shanghai or Singapore. I think Hong Kong will continue to lose its strength overtime….
At the same time, if you are looking to stay in Asia, including China, NUS works really well.
I’m not super familiar with the UK visa and how a difference between the two programs so I cannot comment on that. However if you wanted to be in London, it’s a lot easier to recruit being in Europe and connecting with people and networking there.
Finally, I know nothing about the safety of the towns and I think you would find Singapore to be super fun and have much better food 😂, yet I would consider where you could get a support network. Do you have family or friends either in France or in Singapore? When you recruit and Netwerk every person matters and every person can be a door to an awesome job. See if you have some friends or family nearby, I would consider that as a positive and a plus.
PS. What about the worst case scenario, let’s say you strike out looking for a job after graduation, where would you go back? What is your homebase, is that Italy or is that China or?
