Hi GMATClub!
I was recently accepted to Wharton (~70% tuition scholarship) vs. Kellogg (~50% tuition scholarship.) I am so grateful to be in this position, and I would be very appreciative for your insights.
By way of background, I was not even going to apply to Wharton until a few days before the deadline. It was a super reach.
I want to go into consulting or a rotation program at a F500 company if I can't get into consulting. Possibly even marketing (pretty flexible... letting my interests take me where they take me!) However, I am definitely not interested in finance, tech, social impact, etc. Essentially, like most MBA candidates, I dream of being an executive one day at F500 company.
For context, I am not sure if I can break into MBB because I tried to lateral unsuccessfully pre-MBA to MBB (had interviews with Bain/McKinsey but did not receive lateral offers. I also come from a non-consultant background.)
Wharton:
-Pros: Prestige. Incredible network. Basically, strong in everything.
-Cons: I am primarily worried about off campus housing. I learned that many students live in Rittenhouse Square area. I do not want to be away from most of the students for events & group project meetings if I live closer to campus. Rittenhouse Square is far from campus for a walk (about 2 miles each way). I am not too comfortable using Uber/public transport (e.g., not sure if the subway system is safe.) Also, not sure how safe it is at night in general. Basically, just worried about safety/feeling left out if I am not comfortable going out at night alone (assuming that I find a studio apartment or one bedroom.)
Kellogg:
-Pros: It was always the program I talked about (until I added Wharton to my list.) It was my dream program. I love the campus/housing is in close proximity/has a good college town feel.
-Cons: A plane ride away. More expensive. Not as prestigious as Wharton (although it is splitting hairs... I do wonder if there are certain jobs that are only posted for H/S/W kids through on-campus recruiting).
Overall, I am in a predicament. I would be able to pay for both programs either way/although the additional money from Wharton is obviously incredible. I can try to ask Kellogg to match, but I would be curious to hear from GMATClub if I am overthinking this. I am leaning to Wharton right now due to the prestige/larger network. However, again my main concern is the off-campus housing being scattered/safety. The Wharton students I have talked to say it's safe, but I am not sure how open they are being. I visited Wharton when I was looking at undergrad schools, and it was very nice, but I didn't really explore the surrounding area. I have not visited Kellogg, and I am not sure if it will be feasible for me to do so. However, it looks beautiful based on Google Maps/Youtube tours.

Congratulations on your admits and scholarships! That’s amazing you decided to apply. Was Wharton the only school you applied to? Meaning it was the only round to application or you applied to Kellogg in round two as well?
I started typing and then got distracted with something else.
My sister in law went to UPenn and did not really like the city…. It was not safe or pleasant to be outside of the university. However, it’s kind of the same situation you would have at USC or Booth… the neighborhood around is not really nice and the housing is not nice and so you live a few miles away in a nicer neighborhood. As a result, you will need a new a way to get around. My guess is with so many students and so much traffic going back-and-forth, there’s likely a bus or a shuttle. If everyone lives in the same place, it has to be convenient. You will have 1500 or 2000 students if you take integration both years so you have strength in numbers.
As the bottom line, I think you’ll be as safe as at other major US business schools but I don’t think you will end up settling in Philadelphia after you graduate. Personally, I track business calls closely and I have not heard of any student getting mugged in Philadelphia. I did like the Wire TV series. The last violent attack I’m aware of was I believe of a Yale student a few years ago 😢
Also consider all the 19 year olds going to undergrad and there are thousands and thousands of them, and while the undergrad in business school I’m not in the same exact spot, still environment is more unpleasant than unsafe.
Also, not sure what the options are for the San Francisco campus or is that not possible or not interesting?
How do you think Wharton‘s name is the meaning for step up from Kellogg for the jobs you looking at. I don’t think either program will give you a huge advantage in consulting recruiting but I would not give up on it yet. You can have your game in interviewing and in case studying. There are consulting clubs on campus and you should be able to get your game up. It’s a skill you can learn…
I would by the way encourage you to apply for the pre-MBA consulting internships unless you think you’re not ready yet. They are excepting applications until the end of April across all of them. It looks like the programs have been scaled down but they have been pivoted towards minority and diversity recruiting. Not sure if you fall under that category but it could be a nice easy way to get in potentially …
PS. I’m not sure if you are in a position to visit Wharton. Not sure where you’re located geographically but perhaps you can connect with one of the prospective or current students to give you a FaceTime tour of the campus send area around? To get more comfortable?

Thank you for your quick and helpful response! I also got into Tuck with a similar scholarship to Wharton. I decided to eliminate it from my list for now, although I realize it is fabulous for consulting. I applied to all of these schools Round 2.
When did your sister go to Penn? I would be hoping to stay in Philly the entire time to really take advantage of the experience. I think Wharton/Kellogg have similar prestige in the short-term should I go the consulting path. However, I think the Wharton alumni network may be more powerful in the long-term given the sheer size of the MBA program/being able to even reach out to alumni who attended Wharton for undergrad.
I also think Wharton has more of the "wow" factor. I guess my concern is that if some companies (if I decide to not do consulting), only recruit from Harvard/Stanford/Wharton... I would be unexpectedly closing a few doors if I go to Kellogg.
