Got it. Entrepreneurship is kind of tough with generating big bucks after business school.

The best bet out of the US schools for Consulting would be UNC. That program has the best focus on consulting and the best placement rates. I have no idea about ISB and how that compares. I think there’s no problem or issue going to that program even without a scholarship. I just don’t know the employment opportunities afterwards and you probably know them better than I do.

For HEC, I think this is the most prestigious programs out of the whole group but still I think it would require you to look for a job back in India or best case would be London…

I would also say that consulting is very competitive and if you’re going to go to Consulting, go in the United States because the pay is so much better and I think the UNC well not as prestigious as HEC, Woodland you better pay and the better job at the lower cost. But I do want to say that consulting is very competitive for international applicants and I’ve known a lot of very high-quality very capable people who did not get through the multiple interviews. And knowing that they did not get through, makes me pretty insecure about my own skills and similarly I think deems a warning to people to make sure that you have a Plan B and that you realize how competitive and demanding consulting recruiting processes. It requires you to have good presentation skills and thinking on the spot. NBA Consulting recruiting looks like a lot of the client facing skills. Being smart is not good enough by itself. You have to present yourself smart and look good while you do it :-)

Hello everyone,

I have the following admission offers:
1) Deferred admission to ISB 2024 Intake with no scholarship
2) HEC Jan 2024 Intake with no scholarship (9000 Euros deposit needs to be paid by 13th Apr)
3) UCLA Aug 2023 Intake with $60,000 total scholarship
4) UNC Kenan Flagler Aug 2023 Intake with $72,000 total scholarship
5) UW Foster Aug 2023 Intake with $54,000 total scholarship

Now, I'm having a difficult time choosing among the options.

I am from India and I have a total experience of 7 years, 2 of which are from Derivatives Trading and 5 of which are from Healthcare Consulting background.

Please find below my thought process or reasoning for considering/not considering the colleges:
1) My main and genuine reason for pursuing MBA is to expand my business knowledge, build connections with alumni and peers and lastly, credibility.
2) I would like to pursue my MBA at a location that provides me with a good Quality of Life - in terms of safety, less xenophobic, welcoming, etc.
3) I would like to work in the Corporate till I repay my loan but in the long term, I would like to start something on my own. In line with the same, I am slightly more inclined to choose a less rigorous course so that I get some time for myself to focus on my idea.
4) ISB is a true comfort zone. The college is in my hometown, it is a known cohort. I will have my friend -circle and family close to me. It is also the best program of the country with access to best network of the country.
5) As opposed to this, an MBA Abroad would be unknown territory. It will have international exposure, high fee, scope for greater learning, and allow me to form connections all across the world.
6) All I know about international MBA is in theory, so amidst this uncertainty, so just wanted to understand if it does truly add a lot of value.
7) Based on my conversations with current students from several top MBA colleges, I have received mixed reviews to an extent that many have suggested ISB to be a better choice when compared to the challenges of studying abroad. Hence I am wondering that an MBA abroad, while certainly having a certain value add, comes with its set of coma in terms of the living conditions and life outside the classroom.
8) As of now, I would want to come back to India in the medium-long term (~5 years)
9) I read somewhere that at US or EU, it usually takes 5-6 years to repay the loan, so 2 years of education + 5 - 6 years to breakeven would essentially put me in a tied-up space.

I’d like to keep my option of settling abroad open. At the same time, I also want to keep my options open for returning back to the country at some point in the future. Hence, I would like the international MBA that I choose to be recognized in India

Post my MBA, I would want to work in Consulting (at least till I pay back my loan), meanwhile also exploring entrepreneurial prospects.

Also, one point of consideration for me has been the contrasting viewpoints I have been hearing on EU vs US post MBA job markets.

These are a few of my points to choose a college and the location of the college. Based on these thoughts, could you kindly share your thoughts on how I can proceed or which college would be most beneficial and your reasoning for believing so.

Looking forward to your reply with much anticipation.

ksuraj517 hope this finds you well

Firstly, congratulations on your impressive array of admissions! You have an extensive list of options to consider. :)

If your focus is on consulting, UNC seems to be the best choice, also considering the scholarship they have offered. Additionally, referring to point number 2 on your list, I want to add that the environment at UNC is very friendly and welcoming, with strong support due to a sizeable community of Indian students at UNC State/Raleigh (lived in the Carolinas for 3 years and visited the campus often).

But the most important factors to consider at this point should be your willingness to take a leap of faith to experience a new geography, and job market, and possibly some uncertainty in both personal and professional aspects in the short-term horizon (next 5-6 years).

Since you have good experience in healthcare consulting, I do not see why you wouldn't be able to secure even better consulting opportunities after ISB, either in India or abroad. However, if your objective at this stage of your life is to explore new dimensions such as studying abroad, working in the US, and experiencing the American dream, then you should consider the US offers.

Based on recent feedback from students, HEC hasn't had a strong consulting recruitment season recently, so I would not recommend it as your top choice in this case.

Also, I'm curious if you yourself requested a deferral for ISB?

Best wishes
