Hello All,

I am 32 years old married Female from India. Spouse lives in US.

I have received admissions from UCI Paul Merage and McDonough School of Business for Full-Time MBA. I would really appreciate your expert advice on how to choose between the 2 programs. Should I wait for one more year and reapply?

My Background:
I did my undergraduate in Chemical Engineering in 2014.
8 years of work experience in Indian Public Sector Enterprise (Mining). Initial 4 years in Operations and Quality Control. Then 4 years of experience in project management and implementation (SAP Enterprise Resource Planning).

Post-MBA Goal: Supply-Chain Management/Program Management in leadership development programs. Open to non-tech product management.

Admits:
UCI Merage: 44K Scholarship and 50K Teaching Assistantship
McDonough: No Scholarship

Hey RichaSaurabh,

Congratulations on both your admits!!!

Rather than giving a straight preference between the two programs, I will highlight some factors that you need to think about prior to making the final choice. Your situation has multiple elements and its best to take all them into consideration during your evaluation:

Personal Element: Since you are currently based in India and your spouse is working in the US, it will probably make sense to be in the same city or in proximity to his location so that you can have a constant connect (preferably be together). Travelling across the US can take a toll and will not be an optimal setup specially since both the schools that you mentioned are on opposite coasts.

Program Itself: Here I would say that the McDonough School of Business would have a distinct edge since they are one of few schools in the DC area and have been running the program for while. The program has pretty positive reviews and since they are a national university you will be considered a target school for a lot of the Fortune 500 companies. The proximity to NYC is also another factor which will open doors to consulting and Finance recruitment (even some good program management opportunities).

The Technology Industry: UCI being in the California region will probably have a slight advantage in terms of Technology recruitment although the school may not be the top preference given the presence of other stronger programs like Stanford GSB, Haas, Anderson, USC Marshall etc. Additionally the technology recruitment is likely to be on the backfoot for the entire year and hence you may have fair amount of difficulty finding an internship (which is crucial for FT jobs as close to 60% FT recruitment is from the internship pipeline)

Scholarship / Fees: My sense is the total cost of attendance is likely going to be much higher in the California region so please do bake that into your calculation and maybe try to reach out to the adcom for additional fee waivers if they are possible (no harm in asking).

Weather: California wins hands down, the weather in DC will get dull and gloomy specially during the winters so that probably something to keep in mind from an overall perspective.

Lastly: Do check if your spouse can relocate to the option that you have in mind, even if its 2/3 day Work From Office there is no harm in flying in and out. Additionally, some companies maybe open to relocating him if he tells them about your situation. MBA can be taxing so will be helpful to have him around as well.

Hope that helps? All the best!

Thanks,
TheMBAEdge

TheMBAEdge, thank you for such a detailed explanation.

Currently, my spouse resides in California.

Regarding scholarships, I reached out to the McDonough Admissions team. But, I could not get any.

If my target Company is Amazon for their leadership development programs such as Operations Pathways, Program Management, and Non-Tech Product Management, which program will help me?

Hey Richa,

Specifically for Amazon, its the largest recruiter for almost all the top tier program. Okay actually let me correct that, it *was* the largest recruiter prior to the tech meltdown. So if its Amazon that's on your mind, you will have a fair shot from both the schools since Amazon has a pretty centralized recruitment process.

Do reach out at [email protected] if you have additional queries.

Thanks,
