Is HKUST a well known university in the globe? A lot of people have heard or know about HKU but I’m not sure this is the case for HKUST

Hi Guys!
I have recently received offers from HKU (LBS Track with scholarship) and HKUST. HKUST's scholarship is yet to be finalised. Which school shall I go for? or, Shall I wait for the decisions from Schools in USA? I am expected to give a response to the HK schools by 16th. I am also awaiting decisions from ISB.
Is there any difference between HKU and HKUST in terms of culture/networking/academics/brand name/employability ?
I have been able to track some alumnis of HKUST on linkedin, however, I was not able to find many from HKU MBA. I tried to reach out to a few alumnis but none of them replied :')
I am really confused.
beingappy you are asking a very broad question here, regarding the chances at US B schools or ISB without any context.

Between HKUST and the HKU business school, you will likely find more active alumni from the former especially if you are looking for Indian alumni. But from within my circle, I have known from first hand sources that the opportunities at HKU have been decent as well. Some highly sought after positions in the Singapore job market in Big tech are filled from HKU, so I have observed that the business school has a good reach in the dynamic markets in Asia. I suggest you request the HKU officials to help you connect with some alumni or current students.
If you absolutely cannot find anyone, reach out to me and I will see what I can do. HKUST has a better brand recall in the rest of the world , but with the LBS track, HKU does look attractive too.

Best wishes

Hi GreyWhite glad you asked this question. You are right, HKUST doesnt have a great brand recall globally, but it does have some very specific and lucrative recruitment pipelines into good companies in the East and South East Asia region, and that includes the Singapore job market as well. For more details you should speak with alums who recently graduated to understand the ground reality.

Best wishes

so should I choose HKU MBA over HKUST MBA? I know that HKUST MBA is ranked in all MBA rankings, including the newer ones, such as the LinkedIn one and the Bloomberg one, while HKU is only present in the QS and FT rankings. It is totally unranked in the LinkedIn one and the Bloomberg one. I have a feeling that HKU is all about layman (and global) prestige but HKUST is more about its name is a very specific area.

GreyWhite My bad, in my last comment I meant to say HKU and not HKUST.

HKUST has a better brand recall outside of HK region. HKU is more localised. But it is true that HKU still has some decent tie ups with companies in Singapore. One that I am very clearly aware of is HKU's tie up with Apple's Singapore office.

If you are not familiar with the HK region then HKUST is definitely more well-known outside of the region, as you already saw on the global rankings.

thanks so much for your help. So in general, globally HKUST MBA >>>>> HKU MBA and HKUST and HKU are very known in East and Southeast Asia. You've helped a lot.

Sorry. I was asking about the reputation of the two universities as a whole rather than the business school. Would HKU be better than HKUSt in this regard?

I thought HKu would be more prestigious outside HK because of its history😁😁
