Hi everyone,

I am planning to apply to  ISB PGP Co'28 in Round 1  and would appreciate feedback on my chances, areas of concern, and suggestions to strengthen my application.

 B.Tech, Chemical Engineering, Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), Visakhapatnam, CGPA: 9.43/10 (Department Rank 2)

Work Experience

Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) 
 
 Started Working as  Production Engineer  in October 2022 
 Promoted to  Senior Production Engineer  in ~3.5 years 
 Current Role:  Shift-in-Charge , Atmospheric & Vacuum Distillation Unit (AVU)

Key Responsibilities:
 
 Leading a team of 16 Engineering Assistants (Both field and panel). 
 Responsible for safe and efficient operation of AVU, a critical refinery process unit. 
 Managing production targets, safe handling of process upsets, planning for start-up/shutdown activities, and cross functional coordination with maintenance and inspection teams. 
 Involved in supporting activities related to  Digboi Refinery 1 MMTPA Expansion Project  (DR 1.0).

Achievements and Extracurriculars

SBI Silver Medal for securing the  2nd highest CGPA  in the department. 
 GATE 2022 (Chemical Engineering):  AIR 93  
 Published research paper in Chemical Engineering Science (Elsevier). 
 B.Tech Final Year Project selected for presentation at the Euromembrane Conference 2022 (Italy) 
 Contributed to achieving  best performance in FY2024 : ~110% of target throughput and ~120% of design capacity. 
  Hobbies : Badminton and Table Tennis

Your academics are a strong positive with 91.71% in Class 10, 92% in Class 12, 9.43 CGPA in Chemical Engineering, department rank, GATE AIR 93, and a research publication. IOCL is also a strong brand, and your progression to Senior Production Engineer and Shift-in-Charge within around 3.5 years reflects good performance and growth. Managing a team of 16 members and handling a critical refinery unit provides strong leadership examples; however, in your application, focus on highlighting the impact you have created rather than only describing your responsibilities.

As you are aware, the GMAT score is currently the biggest area of improvement. I would recommend targeting a score closer to 675+ to remain competitive for ISB. Beyond the score, the other key factor will be your career narrative. Since your background is in core engineering and refinery operations, you need to clearly articulate why you want an MBA at this stage, what career transition you are aiming for, and how ISB will help you achieve those goals. Avoid keeping the goals too broad and build a focused story around areas such as energy, operations leadership, consulting, supply chain, or general management.

Hi aviikkk Sorry to burst the bubble, but this profile is gravely overrepresented at Indian B-schools like ISB and the IIM PGP programs. You will have to be cut-throat strategic with how you speak about your projects, and if the best programs of the lot, like ISB PGP and IIM A PGPX, do not convert this year, you should ideally take some strategic bets to change the course of your career or at least change your function to show intentional challenge-taking. That could be either moving toward more business-oriented roles within IOCL or completely moving out of the public sector toward startups or organizations that value your experience in petrochemicals or your operations leadership background. Last year, one of my mentees from IOCL cracked IIM PGPX, and he had strategically moved his focus from engineering and ops toward IOCL's retail sales, researching and expanding the retail network, as well as working on revenue strategies. There is literally no dearth of applicants who come from production and maintenance operations roles in PSUs. I, too, have a background in industrial production pre-MBA, and I coach a lot of MBA applicants from PSUs, the Army, and the Navy every year, so feel free to reach out and discuss your case.   The Shift:  Ensure your essays shift the focus from  what  you managed (the AVU, the team) to  how  you led, the business decisions you influenced, and how your technical background uniquely prepares you for a career in management (e.g., Energy Consulting, Supply Chain, or General Management).

Connect the dots -> To your post MBA career goals. Are you looking to transition or progress within your industry. 
 Leverage your people & process excellence skills to demonstrate leadership & stakeholder management skills.

The combination of IIPE rank 2, a GATE AIR 93, and Elsevier publication tells us you have the intellectual credibility ISB looks for, but the Focus 605 is the immediate structural problem and it needs to be addressed head-on before anything else.

•⁠ ⁠A Focus 605 sits roughly around Classic 640 to 650 in percentile terms, well below ISB's recent median, which hovers closer to Classic 700 (approximately Focus 660 to 665). ISB does admit below-median candidates, but the bar tightens sharply when the work profile is PSU operations, where quant-heavy roles often draw scrutiny precisely because adcoms want evidence the analytical ability matches the academic record.
•⁠ ⁠The good news is that your academic signal is unusually clean: 9.43 at a NIRF-ranked petroleum engineering school, a published paper, and a national-rank GATE score all push back hard against a weak GMAT quant story. A retake targeting Focus 645 to 655 minimum would shift the conversation noticeably.
•⁠ ⁠The subtler risk is your career narrative. Shift-in-Charge at a 1 MMTPA unit is operationally credible, but ISB adcoms will ask what the MBA unlocks that IOCL's internal progression cannot.
