I had a 675 GMAT Focus when i applied to ISB last year in round 2 and got admitted. So your target score looks about right, it’s the industry pivot i’m worried about, law might not give you the right background to go for PE/VC, given the recent dip in graduate offers, i would recommend going for an industry where you have the biggest chance and then working on the pivot once you’re in a Post MBA legal role

Thank you for response. But is 650 - 675 a doable score in the next 100 days. I have been studying on a daily basis for 2 hrs and on weekends 3-4 hours.

You will surely benefit from my post- ISB Essays 2027-28 : Debrief and Winning Tips : ISB

I do want to leave you with one caution. One-year MBA programs are generally not designed for making drastic career pivots or breaking into traditional investment careers (although there are certainly exceptions). Corporate strategy is a much more realistic transition. But if your long-term goal is PE, VC, or investment banking, I would strongly consider moving into a suitable starter role at a boutique investment firm pre-MBA to improve your odds. Also, ISB is not seen as 'the school' for finance. Its strengths have been in strategy, general management, program management, and technology-oriented roles. If finance remains your goal, you should do extensive research on precedents and make those insights a very focused part of your application. You also have a long way to go on the GMAT. I hope you are maintaining detailed error logs so that you can identify recurring patterns in your mistakes and internalize the underlying concepts much faster.

Best wishes

Hello Everyone,

My name is Ashutosh. I am a Qualified Company Secretary (CS) and an LL.B. graduate with close to 4 years of experience in Secretarial, Legal, and Corporate Compliance.

I currently work as the Designated Company Secretary of a private company (a joint venture), where I handle corporate secretarial and compliance matters.

I am 27 years old and based in Mumbai.

Over the last year, I’ve started feeling that my career growth has become somewhat stagnant. I’ve always been interested in Corporate Strategy, Investment Banking, and Private Equity/Venture Capital, and after a lot of thought, I decided to pursue an MBA through ISB.

I recently took my first GMAT Focus diagnostic and scored 415 (Q67, DI70, VR75). I know I have a long way to go, but it gave me a realistic starting point. My math is not weak its just i was confused and was not able to recollect what i had done in my school. I’ve created a 100-day study plan, studying 2–3 hours on weekdays and longer on weekends, with the goal of taking the GMAT in October and applying to ISB Round 2 (December 6 deadline).

My other qualifications

SSC - 86.60 % ; HSC - 83.23 %

Degrees - CS ; LLB ; BCOM

Post graduate course - Securities Law Course

If I manage to score around the 650–675 range, I would appreciate guidance on the following:

1. Is a 650–675 GMAT Focus score competitive for ISB considering my background?
2. What should I focus on while preparing my ISB application after the GMAT?
3. What kind of questions does ISB typically ask in its essays, and what are they trying to evaluate?
4. Any advice regarding recommendation letters? I plan to request one from my current reporting manager.
5. For applicants who made a significant improvement in their GMAT score, what study strategies helped the most?

Finally, if anyone has transitioned from a Company Secretary/Legal/Compliance background into consulting, corporate strategy, investment banking, or similar roles after ISB, I’d love to hear about your experience.

Thank you in advance. I would really appreciate any advice or insights from this community.

Yes very doable, my biggest advice for you would be to cover as many different categories of questions as possible, every question on the exam shares a similarity with each other, once you figure that out, things will be much simpler

Hi Flameashu,

Best wishes with your GMAT prep! The essay prompts are available on the portal already. The prompts focus on your Strengths & Weakness, Instances of your Success & Failures, and post MBA goals. I suggest that you introspect around your post MBA goals. Think around the following:

  • What transferrable skills will you leverage to transition into your target roles (Corporate Start/IB/PE/VC)? Keep in mind that the nature of work of all areas that you have listed are quite different. Strat roles differ significantly with IB/VC roles. You will need to demonstrate clarity in your goals.
  • While it is understandable that you feel stuck in your current role, how do you plan to leverage an MBA to propel yourself forward?
  • While the X & XII scores are on the lower side, as long as you can target 655+ and back it up with strong essays & leadership experience at work and outside, you are in the race.

Feel free to reach out for any query!

Regards,

Lakshya - Admit

Hi Flameashu,
Thanks for posting. After going through your query, here is what we have evaluated

In the ISB pool, files from legal and compliance backgrounds are relatively rare, which is genuinely useful, but the question of where your case gets decided is almost certainly the career-transition story, not the test score.

- A 650 to 675 on the current GMAT puts you roughly in the 87th to 95th percentile, which corresponds to approximately 690 to 720 on the classic scale. That sits inside ISB's working range, so a score there won't close doors; what it means is the rest of your file does the heavier lifting.

- Four years as a Designated Company Secretary in a JV gives you something concrete to build from: governance decisions, regulatory exposure, and the kind of multi-stakeholder complexity that translates well into strategy roles. What admissions readers at ISB will press on is whether you can quantify the business consequence of that work, not just describe the function. Filings managed, entities covered, transactions supported all become evidence.

- The target roles you named, IB and PE/VC specifically, sit at the more competitive end of ISB placements and typically favour candidates who can show financial or deal-adjacent exposure. Your Securities Law course is worth mentioning because it bridges compliance and capital markets; if you've worked on transactions or dealt with SEBI-related matters in your JV role, that connection needs to be explicit in the essays.

- Recommendation letters from a current reporting manager are standard, but at ISB they carry most weight when the recommender can speak to judgment under pressure and business impact, not just professional conduct. If your manager has visibility into a specific situation where your advice shaped a significant decision, that framing serves you better than a general endorsement.

The single lever that moves this application most is a goals narrative specific enough to explain why ISB's finance and strategy recruiting ecosystem is the right bridge from corporate governance to where you want to be.

Hope this helps. Feel free to come back with more queries as needed. Contact us directly – submit a query here.
