Hi there,

I am at the stage of starting my SOP's and I cannot find any good examples at all. While there are many example MBA essays, nothing re SOPs for PhD entry. Does anyone know of any online? Would any applicants from last year be willing to share a SOP?

SOP pointers

1. Write your own . Start with why you really want to do Phd. Attached please find a guide from HBS phd pages, should give some pointers.

2. BE extremely positive and attacking. Write about why PhD Career option excites you.

3. Show it to your friends, ask for critique.

4. Do some research about the school. Please do not assume that a single SOP is fine with all schools - it is not. Your SOP must indicate how THAT school fits your interests and whyyou are interested and excited about that school

Hi Mick!

There's awesome post on statement of purpose (by Vince Gotera. English Language and Literature, University of Northern Iowa) writing here. Here its fragment,

"Try to make your paper-and-ink self come alive. Don't just say, "I used to work on an assembly line in a television factory, and one day I decided that I had to get out of there, so I went to college to save my own life." How about this: "One Thursday, I had soldered the 112th green wire on the same place on the 112th TV remote, and I realized the solder fumes were rotting my brain. I decided college would be my salvation." Both 35 words. Which narrative do you think will keep the admissions committee reading?"

Also, there are a lot of helpful tips on how to write a SOP for PhD as well as samples.
