IntroductionAs a PhD student at Stanford Graduate School of Business, you will be inspired and challenged to explore novel ideas and complex questions. PhD Program at Stanford is designed to develop outstanding scholars for careers in research and teaching at leading academic institutions throughout the world. You will embark on a challenging and meaningful experience, focusing your academic study in one of
seven distinct fields within the PhD degree program.
Strong PhD candidates are full of ideas and curiosity, with a passion and aptitude for research. If you’re prepared to embark on a rigorous career in research and develop your full potential, Stanford invites you to explore the possibilities of a PhD in business. Admitted students receive full fellowships for their doctoral studies.
Fields of StudyFrom their first day in the program, Stanford GSB PhD students will focus their academic experiences in one of
seven distinct fields of study. This concentrated approach enables students to gain the maximum benefit from their time in the program, and to effectively prepare themselves to excel in careers in research and academia in their chosen field. The following are seven fields of research.
1. Accounting
2. Economic Analysis & Policy
3. Finance
4. Marketing
5. Operations, Information & Technology
6. Organizational Behavior
7. Political Economics
Academic ExperienceThe PhD program’s distinct academic approach is designed to enable students to excel as researchers, educators, and scholars in the future. Throughout their five-year experience, students focus on one of
seven distinct areas of study. Students work closely with PhD faculty and the other students within their field of study, among other scholars and peers across the university. Small class sizes and an intimate faculty-to-student ratio ensures that all students benefit from the attention and expertise of respected experts in their fields.
Admission to the PhD ProgramEach year, Stanford welcome a select group of exceptional individuals to the PhD program. All students bring a readiness to commit to the most rigorous, rewarding experience of their academic careers.
The application deadline is
December 1, at 5:00 PM PST.
Complete your online application. All applicants are carefully considered for their academic preparation and performance, and their potential to be outstanding researchers. The program consider the strength of recommendation letters, standardized test scores, rigor of academic preparation, and alignment of research interests between students and faculty, among other areas.
Application EvaluationEach admission decision is based on a comprehensive evaluation of an applicant. In addition to expecting rigorous academic preparation, the faculty places significant value on an applicant’s qualitative characteristics, such as creativity, imagination, perseverance, ability to provide deep insights and criticism, and (usually) a predisposition toward being independently motivated. They also seek a good fit between the applicant’s research interests and the faculty’s.
Academic PreparationApplicants who have at least a bachelor’s or comparable academic degree will be considered for admission. Although there are no required courses to begin a doctoral program, it is highly recommended that applicants have a strong background in quantitative methods. Depending on your individual field of study, it may also be beneficial to have a good understanding of the basic principles of your chosen field: for example, a knowledge of psychology or sociology if you are pursuing graduate work in organizational behavior, or a substantial background in economics and mathematics if you are applying to study economic analysis and policy.
Previous ExperiencePrior exposure to research, preferably academic work, is a plus. However, work experience is not required to gain admission into the program.
Varied BackgroundsThe PhD student community includes individuals who come from a variety of personal and professional backgrounds. They range from individuals with experience in management and/or industry to those newly graduated from undergraduate programs such as economics, mathematics, or psychology.
Suggested preparation and qualifications for admission into specific fields are detailed in the individual field descriptions.

Tips for Scanning and Submitting Documents
- Do not password-protect the document or embed macros
- Limit the file size to 10 MB
- Configure the document to print full-size on 8.5 x 11” letter-size paper
Statement of PurposePlease write a brief essay on the following subjects concerning you and your intended field of study:
- Your past work on relevant issues
- What excites you most about your chosen field of study
- Possible areas of research you might pursue
- Any research projects you have completed with faculty
- Any faculty member’s research that is of interest to you
- Any other information you would like to provide to the admissions committee
Stanford is particularly interested in any projects that you pursued with a faculty member who is writing a
recommendation letter for you.
Letters of RecommendationsStanford requires
three letters of recommendations with your application.
In selecting your recommenders, choose individuals who can provide an overall evaluation of
your readiness and potential to succeed as a doctoral student and ultimately as a researcher and professor.
Selecting Your RefereesThe program prefers that all recommendation letters be written by academics. They can be your instructors, your advisors, or, in the case of applicants who hold teaching jobs, your colleagues. In some cases, it may be appropriate to ask nonacademic individuals, as long as they can best speak about your academic abilities. If you have been out of school for a significant period of time, you may substitute non-academic recommenders of your choice.
Recommendation RequirementsYou are responsible for ensuring that all three recommendation letters are submitted online by the
application deadline.Federal law provides, after enrollment, a right of access to letters of reference if retained by the school, and if the right has not been waived; no school may require an applicant to waive this right. You will be asked to read, choose, and sign in regard to your right of access to each recommendation letter.
It is highly inappropriate to draft or write your own letter of reference, even if asked to do so by your referee. If the individual insists on this approach, you should find another referee.
Registering Your RecommendersYou must register your recommender in the online application. Go to the
“Recommendation Letters” tab and enter the names and contact information including a valid email address for each recommender. You may submit your application after
all three recommenders have been registered; you do
not need to wait for your recommenders to submit their recommendation letters.
Submitting Letters of RecommendationIndividuals writing letters of recommendation on your behalf are required to submit them through the online application.* Once you register a recommender, he or she will receive an email confirmation with instructions to log in and submit his/her recommendation letter. Once a letter has been submitted, your recommender will receive an email confirming that the submission was successful. Be sure to ask your recommender to use your formal name when writing your recommendation letter.
Check the Status of Your Letters of RecommendationYou can log in to the online application to verify whether all letters of recommendation have been received and to also send your recommenders a reminder if necessary. Stanford cannot guarantee the review of any materials received after the deadline.
*Unless an exception has been made by our office, hard copies of recommendation letters will not be accepted. If your recommender cannot submit his/her letter of recommendation online, contact our office to receive a hard copy of the recommender form.ReapplicantsIf you previously applied to the Stanford GSB PhD Program, you are considered a reapplicant. The applicant pool for our program is invariably large and competitive. The admissions committee does not generally encourage reapplication unless there has been a significant change in your credentials.

Financial AidThe PhD program provides a financial fellowship to qualified doctoral students that includes tuition, a living stipend, health fee coverage, and opportunities to hold research and/or course assistantships.
All incoming doctoral students are provided with financial aid for five years with possibility of a
sixth-year extension, provided they maintain satisfactory academic progress and meet program milestones. In 2025-26, incoming students receive a living stipend in the amount of
$57,480.Tuition & ExpensesLiving expenses for Stanford GSB depend on a number of factors, such as whether you are married, have children, or own a car, and how you spend your leisure time. For more information on the estimated tuition and living expenses, please see the Stanford Office of Graduate Admissions.
Research & Course AssistantshipsResearch and course assistantships are typically included as part of a student’s funding from Stanford. Academically, a research assistantship serves as an apprenticeship in research that is often the basis for the dissertation research that follows. A teaching assistantship provides experience with the different aspects of the teaching process: course preparation, presentation skills, grading, and evaluation. The standard terms of the assistantship depend on the student’s tenure in the program.
Supplemental IncomeThere are various means of increasing one’s income beyond the granted Stanford GSB financial support package. One method is incidental grading and tutoring, informally known as hourly work. Foreign students, by the terms of their visas, cannot work more than 20 hours per week while school is in session. U.S. citizens cannot work more than 28 hours per week.
Professional Development GrantsThe PhD program encourages students to attend and present research at professional conferences. The program provides funding to cover travel expenses, publication submission fees, and professional organization membership fees. Professional conferences enable students to:
- Gain exposure to types of research that is not done at Stanford
- Discuss the state of research in different areas
- Discuss and get feedback on one’s own work
- Meet leading faculty and PhD students from other schools
Outside Financial SupportPhD students at Stanford GSB have achieved the distinction of receiving fellowship support from a wide array of scholarship foundations. Among the awards they commonly win are fellowships granted by:
- National Science Foundation
- State Farm Companies Foundation
- Deloitte Foundation
- KPMG Foundation
- U.S. Department of Energy
- U.S. Environmental Protection Agency
Outside EmploymentStanford’s PhD program is a full-time program. Students should not plan to rely on part-time work to defray any of their expenses.Because of the rigorous requirements of the PhD program and its research orientation, the program strongly discourages any outside employment other than research with the faculty and incidental grading and/or tutoring positions.
