Strategy and EntrepreneurshipThe doctoral program in Strategy and Entrepreneurship aims to produce leading world-class scholars, who will pursue impactful academic careers following the completion of their PhD.
Program overviewLBS full-time PhD students receive thorough and sophisticated training in the latest research methods, equipping them for productive academic careers.
CourseworkStudents are required to take a range of courses. These include Program Core Courses, Specialized Courses and Elective Courses. Specialized Courses are compulsory for the admitted subject area. Elective courses are chosen from the Specialized Courses in other subject areas.
You will also have the option to take elective courses in London School of Economics (LSE), University College of London (UCL) and Imperial College, London.
ThesisAfter a successful defense of your research proposal, you will progress your own thesis – an original contribution to your chosen specialization. Then, having successfully defended your thesis, and following the completion of any required amendments, you are awarded a London Business School PhD degree.
Key dates and times- Students complete the PhD program within five to six years
- Short-listed applicants are invited to an interview between January - March
- Orientation for new students takes place in late September
Scholarship and fundingAll students offered a place on the PhD program receive full funding which includes a tax-free stipend for five years and a tuition fee waiver (subject to satisfactory academic progress). The annual stipend rate from
September 2025 is £30,623 and it is expected to increase over the following two years, as follows:
- September 2027 - £33,762.
Additional supportAll students also receive financial support for attending specialist, international conferences, and other developmental opportunities. In addition, monetary prizes for academic excellence in specific fields are awarded by London Business School’s institutes. Students also have the opportunity to do paid research and teaching assistance work.
Living in LondonThere is no residential accommodation at the school, but students can apply for accommodation in some of the University of London Intercollegiate Halls of Residence. If you are accepted on the PhD program, you will be provided with further information regarding accommodation options that students have chosen in the past and their cost.
Application requirements- A completed application form with Statement of Purpose (online)
- Two academic reference letters (online)
- Original GMAT or GRE score report (online), completed within the last 5 years and shared with LBS via the institution’s code (see GRE/GMAT section below)
- Official transcript or certified copy of university grades from all past degrees (online). All final official transcripts or certified copies of university grades (signed and stamped) for degrees awarded.
- All final official certificates or diplomas (signed and stamped) for degrees awarded.
- All up to date transcripts (signed and stamped) for degrees in progress (not yet awarded)
- Valid, original Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or Cambridge score report (if required). These tests must have been taken and passed in the last 2 years prior to application submission. TOEFL scores must be shared with the Program via the institutional code (see Language section below).
- Current CV, noting whether qualifications are in progress or the date of award if already achieved.
- LBS does not accept applications or application documentation via email. Please submit all documents via the online application system.
Application Fee WaiverUK applicants from low-income households who are able to evidence that they were in receipt of full state support for maintenance as an undergraduate at a UK university within the last 4 years are eligible for an application fee waiver.
Applicants who are able to evidence they have a valid Asylum Registration Card or Biometric Residence Permit and Overseas Applicants from any of the countries included on the
UN list of least developed countries are also eligible for an application fee waiver. Individuals who feel that they need a fee waiver but do not meet these criteria may contact the Program Office-
[email protected] explaining their circumstances to request a waiver.
For all other applicants, there is an application
fee of £75.Ph.D. InterviewsShort-listed applicants will be invited to an interview between
January and March. Initial Interviews may be online with follow up interviews taking place in person, depending on the subject area. If you are short-listed, you will be contacted by the relevant subject area who will provide full details of the interview arrangements. If you are invited to attend an in-person interview at LBS, the Program will reimburse reasonable travel costs, accommodation and subsistence.
Regrettably, due to the large number of applications received each year, it is not possible to arrange meetings with members of faculty prior to an interview.
English Language ProficiencyUnless you are an English speaker or have a degree from a university in an English-speaking country, (where the language of instruction was English) according to UK Visa and Immigration policy guidance you must submit evidence of proficiency in English.
Minimum acceptable scores for eligibility for the PhD Program are at least 600 (paper-based), 250 (computer-based) or 100 (Internet-based) on the TOEFL to be considered for the PhD program
.
Other recognized English language tests (IELTS, Cambridge) are also accepted. A valid test report,

Transatlantic Doctoral ConferenceThe annual Trans-Atlantic Doctoral Conference is held for doctoral students from leading business schools in North America and Europe to provide a unique opportunity to meet fellow students and discuss current research. This conference has been hosted by London Business School since 2001 and has grown consistently in its size and reputation among doctoral students in top business schools.
The next TADC is planned to take place in May/June 2027.I hope that helps.
