Decision Sciences
The Decision Sciences area carries out research, teaching, and consulting activities in theoretical and applied statistics, optimization theory, business analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, big data methodologies, and related applications to management problems. Faculty in the Decision Sciences area work closely with both industry and government sectors and conduct theoretical and applied research across the entire decision sciences spectrum.

Finance & Accounting
Through their teaching, research, and professional activities, area faculty members aim to influence the theories of asset pricing, financial management, and financial reporting. Area faculty’s research on fundamental questions in finance and accounting has been published in leading academic accounting journals. Information Systems
The Information Systems Area at IIM Bangalore offers postgraduate courses on Management of IS & Technology, Artificial Intelligence, Managing Digital Transformations, Big Data, Machine Learning, Software Product Management and Introduction to Computing. Doctoral courses include IS Management, IS Research Foundations, IS Theory, and ICT for Development that familiarize students with the state-of-the-art research in the area. Current research interests cover multiple contemporary topics such as social media, telemedicine, IT outsourcing, cloud computing, digital platforms, digital payments, e-government, etc. The IS area also leads the Centre for Software and IT Management for conducting impactful activities related to research and practice.

Production & Operations Management
The Doctoral Programme in Production and Operations Management addresses research issues related to manufacturing, services, and technology management. Specific themes, among others, for research include the following: Sustainable Operations, IT Services and Electronic, supply Chain Management, Manufacturing and Service Strategy, Healthcare and Services, Technology Strategy, Sourcing and Procurement, and Logistics Management. Faculty and students also engage with the Supply Chain Management Centre at IIMB. The Centre brings together practitioners from leading organizations and IIMB’s multidisciplinary faculty and students to identify, document, research, develop and disseminate best practices in Supply Chain Management.

Entrepreneurship
The Doctoral Programme in Entrepreneurship covers research that spans a wide range of theoretical perspectives in entrepreneurship, research methods and tools, and specific topics covering different contexts in which the entrepreneurship phenomenon is observed and practiced. The coursework includes courses from allied disciplines like economics, strategy and organizational theory. Faculty members have the expertise and competence to guide research in areas such as: entrepreneurial cognition, entrepreneurial opportunities, entrepreneurship theory, high growth entrepreneurship, entrepreneurial networks, entrepreneurial ecosystems, and international entrepreneurship. The area also works closely with NSRCEL, which is a leading incubator in the country, to explore practice-relevant research questions as well as translate research into practice.

Marketing
The Doctoral Programme in Marketing focuses on a wide range of topics using a variety of research methods and tools. Faculty members have the expertise in a variety of areas including Product Management, Brand Management, Marketing Decision Models, Consumer Behaviour, Marketing Strategy, Services Marketing, Retailing, and Business to Business Marketing. The coursework includes courses on marketing management, marketing models, and research methods.

Public Policy
The Doctoral Programme in Public Policy focuses on research in public policy analysis, design, process and management. Doctoral-level courses cover research that spans a wide range of sectors and policy areas. Faculty members have the expertise to guide research in areas such as development economics, education and labour, health systems and ageing, gender and household welfare, poverty and inequality, financial inclusion, urban governance, environmental sustainability, and the political and institutional foundations of public service delivery. Students and faculty actively engage with the Centre for Public Policy at IIMB.

Strategy
Faculty in the Strategy Area are interested in factors that influence the performance of firms. Topics of interest include the variety of activities that businesses internally undertake (e.g. mergers and acquisitions, innovation, diversification, internationalization) or are externally influenced by (e.g. regulation, regional ecosystem, stakeholders). Apart from the core area of strategic management, faculty are also interested in international business, strategic alliances, new product development, management of technology and innovation, and corporate governance. The area closely interacts with allied fields such as economics, sociology and organizational behaviour, and develops theories that help scholars, practitioners, and policymakers understand the drivers of firm performance.

Programme Details:

Years 1 and 2
Core and Elective courses

The first two years of the programme are devoted to coursework and the student is required to take 18 three-credit courses over this period. At least, nine of these courses should be taken in the first year and nine in the second year.

Independent Study (IS)

Students must undertake Independent Study (IS) for the first two years in addition to the 18 courses. A total of six credits of IS must be taken, with a maximum of three credits every year.
Independent Study must be done under the supervision of a faculty guide and allows student to develop knowledge in an area of mutual interest.
Prior to registering for Independent Study the student must document the goals objectives, outcomes, and deliverables from the Independent Study. At the end of each IS, the student must submit a final report summarising the tasks accomplished, outcomes, and deliverables.

Communicating Research 1 and 2

Two 1.5 credit compulsory courses (Communicating Research 1 in Year 1 and Communicating Research 2 in Year 2) are taken by all PhD students.
These courses focus on various topics including technical writing, research ethics, presentation and teaching techniques, case and research article writing, and publication process.

Research Assistantship

Doctoral students are required to do Research Assistantship (RA) corresponding ten hours a week in each term of their first two years in the programme.
The research assistantship is expected to enable a doctoral student to:

- get exposure to research topics in their area of specialization.

- narrow their areas of interest and faculty associated with their dissertation.

Research Assistantship must be done under the supervision of a faculty guide. The Area Chairperson/Area Doctoral Programme Coordinator may rotate students among various faculty members so that the students become aware of research work being done by various faculty members. However, the students work for the complete term with the faculty allotted to them.

Summer Research Project

The objectives of the Summer Research Project at the end of the first year are to supplement the student’s conceptual understanding developed during the first year and improve research skills of the student.
The student works on this summer research project under the guidance of a faculty member which, ideally, will provide the base for subsequent preparation of a paper.
A report of the summer project is provided by the student to the faculty guide and the Doctoral Programme Office.

Programme Details: Years 3 and beyond
Dissertation Credits

From year 3 onwards, when the doctoral students begin to work in their dissertation work, they are required to register for dissertation credits under the supervision of faculty guiding their dissertation.
The student must document the goals objectives, expected outcomes, and deliverables at the start the term and the guiding faculty provides feedback on the progress at the end of the term.

Teaching Assistantship

Teaching Assistantship (TA) work is typically assigned from Year 3.

The task of TA requires that the student should sit through classes and grade. He/she should develop teaching material and material for tutorials, and in exceptional cases perhaps handle a session or two.
Usually, the Area Chairperson assigns the TA duties for the doctoral students.

Comprehensive Examination

A Doctoral Programme student is eligible to take the Comprehensive Examination if the student:

- Maintains a satisfactory CGPA in coursework in Year 1 and in Year 2

- Maintains satisfactory performance in IS and RA taken in Year 1 and Year 2

- Satisfies core course CGPA requirements specified by the area (if any)

The exam consists of a Written Exam and an Oral Viva.
The written part of the Comprehensive Examination assesses the student’s conceptual and methodological capability, and ability to perform independent research in his/her area of interest.
The Viva-Voce part of the Comprehensive Examination assesses the student’s conceptual understanding and ability to articulate understanding of a topic and related fields/streams, interpret questions and respond in an appropriate manner.

Dissertation Advisory Committee (DAC)

After passing the Comprehensive Examination, the student finalises the topic for his/her dissertation research. The student is expected to choose a topic for research in his/her area of specialization, which may be any functional area of management or application of management concepts and techniques to public policy/systems.

The student must also seek the consent of a faculty member to serve as the Chairperson of the student’s Dissertation Advisory Committee (DAC).
The dissertation adviser and the student then together identify two other faculty members who consent to serve as members of the student’s Dissertation Advisory Committee (DAC).
The student’s DAC must be finalized by the end of Term 2 of Year 3.
The DAC provides supervision and guidance to the student to ensure steady progress of his/her dissertation research. They advise the student in the development, and preparation of a dissertation proposal and proposal defence, subsequent thesis work and its completion, and preparation of a final draft of the final thesis.

Dissertation Proposal and Proposal Defense

The student must prepare, under the guidance of the DAC, a detailed proposal for research work on his/her selected topic of thesis research.
This proposal must be presented, and defended, to the IIMB academic community by the student at a public seminar, called as the Proposal Defense. The Proposal Defense helps the student validate research progress and obtain feedback to strengthen his/her dissertation.
The preparation of the detailed dissertation proposal and its presentation to the IIMB academic community must be completed by the end of Term 2 of Year 4.

Dissertation Evaluation

After a successful Proposal Defense, the student proceeds to complete the dissertation work and prepare a draft of the final dissertation.
The student has to submit a draft of the dissertation to the DAC by the end of Term 1 of Year 5.
The DAC Chairperson and other members of the DAC provide feedback on the draft and advise the student on whether its quality, and level of completion, suffice for the student to work towards preparing a final draft that is ready for dissertation evaluation by external examiners.
External examiners evaluate the thesis on the basis of originality of contribution, whether it contains original ideas and related applications, and whether it is ready for a dissertation defense.

Dissertation Defense

The dissertation defense comprises a public seminar in which the student presents the dissertation and an oral examination, evaluated by all the DAC members and the external examiners who evaluated the dissertation.
The oral examination conducted by the DEC evaluates the acceptability of the dissertation for the award of degree of PhD.
For a dissertation to be accepted, the members of DEC must categorically certify that the dissertation is of the standard for the award of the Doctoral Programme of IIM Bangalore.

Eligibility

Candidates that apply for admission should have either:

a. A Master's degree (obtained after completing bachelor’s degree) or,*
b. A five-year Integrated Master’s degree (obtained after completing higher secondary schooling in 10+2 pattern) in any discipline or,*
c. A Post Graduate Diploma (2 years)*
d. A Professional qualification such as CA, ICWA, CS2 or,**
e. A four-year or eight-semesters Bachelor's degree***

Note: The percentage of marks obtained by the candidate would be calculated based on the practice followed by the respective university or institution. In case of grades / CGPA, the conversion to percentage of marks would be based on the procedure certified by the respective university or institute. If a university or institute confirms that there is no scheme for converting CGPA into equivalent marks, the equivalence would be established by dividing the candidate’s CGPA by the maximum possible CGPA and multiplying the result by 100.

*Candidates need to have at least 55 percent marks in the bachelor’s degree, master’s degree(s), and post graduate diploma. This cutoff is 50 percent marks for applicants from SC, ST and PwD categories.

**Candidates with these professional qualifications should have obtained at least 50 percent marks in their B.com or bachelor’s degree. This cutoff is 45 percent for applicants from SC, ST and PwD categories.

***Candidates in this category should have obtained at least 6.5 CGPA or equivalent marks. This cutoff is 6.0 CGPA for applicants from SC, ST and PwD categories. The above qualification should be from one of the Universities, or other educational institutions, incorporated by an act of the Parliament or State legislature in India; or declared to be deemed as a University under Section3 of UGC Act, 1956, or, recognized by the Ministry of HRD, Government of India.

Candidates who are in the final year of the qualifying Programmes that would make them eligible can also apply. (However, in case of CA/ICWA/CS the applicant should have completed the course at the time of applying to the doctoral programme.)

Such final year candidates, if selected, will be allowed to join the programme provisionally only if they submit a certificate (latest by the date of registration to the PhD 2026 programme) from the Principal or Head of the Department or Registrar or Director of the university or institute stating that they have appeared for the examinations (including practical examinations) in all the subjects required for obtaining the Master's or Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification.

Their admission will be confirmed only when they submit the marks sheet and the certificate of having passed the Master's or Bachelor's degree or equivalent qualification referred to in the certificate issued by the Principal or Registrar of their university or institute.

The deadline for submission of marks sheet and the certificates is December 31, 2026.

Please note that those candidates who have applied on the basis of their master's degree will have to meet the 55% marks stipulation, and those who have applied on the basis of their bachelor's degree will have to meet the 65% marks stipulation, or as applicable in the case of candidates from various social categories. Non-fulfillment of these conditions will automatically result in the cancellation of the provisional admission.

Students have to meet the minimum eligibility criteria and a certain minimum level of performance that IIMB may specify in order to be considered for admission into the programme.

Application and admission process

About IIMB Test

The IIMB Test is an entrance examination conducted by the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore (IIMB) for candidates applying to its PhD and PGPEM programmes. The test is administered in an online proctored format, allowing candidates to take it from a secure and isolated environment using a desktop or laptop equipped with a webcam and a stable internet connection.

The examination consists of two sections: a Verbal section and a Quantitative section, with a total duration of two hours. As the test is conducted online, no admit card is issued. Instead, candidates receive a test access link on the day of the examination. Additionally, no scorecard is shared with candidates after the test, as the scores are used solely for internal evaluation purposes.

Please visit the Admissions webpage for instructions on how to register for the IIMB test. Applying for PGPEM or PhD does not automatically register a candidate for the IIMB test. Applicants should register for IIMB test and apply separately for PGPEM or PhD through the notified online application (available on IIMB website) within the stipulated last date.

Instructions for PhD applicants:

Applicants can choose to appear in the IIMB test either once or twice. If the applicant chooses to write the IIMB test twice, only the highest score will be considered during admission.
If the applicant opts for the first test but is unable to attend the test (for whatever reason), the test fee paid earlier stands forfeited. The applicant can appear for the second test by paying the test fee again.
Registration for the IIMB test will generate a receipt number which the candidates need to enter in the PhD programme online application form before submission.
IIMB test score will be used for the internal processing of the application and no test score card shall be issued.

Test fee
The IIMB test fee is Rs 1,200/- for each test and is NON-REFUNDABLE.

Test Scores and guideline

Candidates require a valid test score, from any one of the acceptable tests to the area(s) of specialization they are applying to, as shown in the following table. If you are applying to an area that accepts UGC-CSIR NET, it must be from one of the disciplines specified by the area.

· Except for those opting for IIMB Test, all other candidates should mandatorily provide the test score, which should be valid as on January 22, 2026, while submitting the application.

· Candidates can use only ONE of the acceptable test scores listed in the table above as part of their applications. If students have taken multiple tests that are acceptable, they will need to pick one of the acceptable tests as part of their application to the doctoral progamme at IIMB.

· Applicants opting for GMAT or GRE should have ETS send the OFFICIAL SCORE CARD to IIMB prior to the application deadline and upload a copy of their official test scores along with the application. Applicants who have not received the official score card, should upload the TEST TAKER COPY along with the application, but have ETS send the OFFICIAL SCORE CARD before the interviews.

· Scores of GMAT/GRE taken any time after January 22, 2021, can be used for application for PhD 2026. However, online GMAT/GRE score (exam taken at home) will not be accepted for PhD 2026.

· The GRE Code for IIMB PhD is 7385. Use this code to have your score sent directly to IIMB. This process is mandatory. However, your official report from ETS (for GRE) will be used in the assessment of the application.

· The GMAT code for IIMB PhD is Q9HKK-55. Use this code to have your score sent directly to IIMB. This process is mandatory. However, your official report from Pearson (for GMAT) will be used in the assessment of the application.

Application Checklist

Candidates must fill in their application through the online portal. Candidates may apply to two areas of specialization as part of their application to the doctoral programme at IIMB. Such candidates will need to identify their primary and secondary areas of specialization as part of the application form.
Application packet for all areas includes the following:

· Fully completed online application form
· Photograph (passport size in JPG or PNG format)
· Score report (upload scanned copy of GRE, GMAT, GATE, (UGC-CSIR) NET, CAT, except those using IIMB Test scores for their application.
· Statement of Purpose (upload document specific to the specialization area of candidate)
· Mark sheets (upload scanned copy of 10th Standard, 12th Standard, Bachelors and Masters, and relevant Professional Certificates)
· Category certificate (upload scanned copy, if applicable)
· Letter of recommendation (ask recommender to complete the online process, do not upload scanned copies)
· Additional documents (upload scanned copy of relevant document such as resume or research publications, if available)

Application Fee
The application fee (Non-Refundable) is:

· Applying to One Area: 1000
· Applying to Two Areas: 1500

Interview and Selection

Short list for Area Test and/or Technical Interview
· Based on the information provided by the applicants, candidates will be shortlisted for the next step in the admission process based on the recommendation of the respective area. This process could include an area specific written test and/or technical interview depending on the area of specialization.

· Candidates are requested to see the document on PhD 2026 Area-wise Admission Process for details relevant to their area.
· Only those candidates who have been shortlisted for Area Test and/or Technical Interview will be informed by e-mail, with all relevant details.
· Shortlisted candidates will be notified by February 25th, 2026. Area Test and/or Technical Interview
· The mode of conducting the area specific written test and technical interview is likely to be inperson. Shortlisted candidates will be informed of details in advance.

· Technical interviews are expected to be completed by 13th to 14 th of March 2026.

Final Selection and Admission Offer
Candidates will be admitted to the programme based on a combination of multiple parameters, as also specified by the respective areas. Parameters may include applicant's performance in GMAT, GRE, CAT, GATE, (UGC-CSIR) NET, or IIMB Test (as applicable), past academic performance, work experience, area specific test and / or technical interview performance.

· The date for release of offer letters is 20th March 2026 and the last date for acceptance of offers is 27th March 2026
· Candidates admitted to the Doctoral Programme at IIMB are required to mandatory attend a Preparatory Course tentatively scheduled from late May 2026.
· Formal registration for the Doctoral Programme will happen during that time and will be notified separately on the IIMB website.

Note: The IIMB Test will be conducted and proctored online by IIMB. The candidates can take the test from their own locations / home. The conditions / requirements to be followed by the candidates will be shared ahead of the test.

Financial Support

Financial support comprises mainly a tuition fee waiver and stipend (fellowship) of Rs 42,000 per month.
As part of the fellowship support, the student is expected to provide service as a Research Assistant and Teaching Assistant during various stages of their programme.
In addition, students are also provided single-seater hostel accommodation for five years of the programme. A housing subsidy of Rs 20,000 per month is paid for those that seek married accommodation outside campus.
Doctoral students are also eligible for start-up (Rs 75,000 in year 1) and contingency grants (Rs 25,000 per year in Years 2 to 5) that could be used for books, stationery, computers, and other resources to support their doctoral programme work.
The institute supports students with travel grants to encourage good/high-quality research in the Doctoral Programme and enable doctoral students to gain exposure and the opportunity to present their work in reputed national and international research conferences in their respective areas. Currently, students can avail of funding to the extent of Rs 3,60,000 towards such travel subject to approval by the travel committee.
Doctoral students also receive incentives for successfully achieving various programme milestones. Several students also receive additional external scholarships specially made available for doctoral students.
All financial support is available for a period of five years from the date of registration in the doctoral programme and ceases in the month of June at the end of the fifth year of the programme.

Q1. What is Doctoral Program in management?
Ans: The doctoral program at IIM Bangalore is a five-year full-time PhD Program. The main objectives of the doctoral programme in management at IIM-Bangalore are:

(i) To provide rigorous training in cutting edge inter-disciplinary management research, and
(ii) To train the next generation of academics that inspire business leaders and policy makers. The intent is to train future academics and the programme should not be confused with master’s programs such as MBA.

Q2. Can I complete the course on a part-time basis?
Ans: No, it is a full-time program.

Q3. Who should do the Doctoral Program?
Ans: Students/professionals who want to pursue a career in advanced research and academics (including teaching) are the ideal candidates for this Program. The applicant should have high scholastic ability, aptitude for research and excellent analytical skills.

Q4. What is expected from the Doctoral Program students?
Ans: They are expected to complete two years of doctoral course work, pass a comprehensive exam, and do high quality research as part of their dissertation.

Q5. Do I need to be an MBA to do this Program?
Ans: An MBA is not a pre-requisite. The course work for the PhD programme provides specific training in research methodologies, and tools and provides foundations for management research. Different areas prefer students from diverse backgrounds to match the area requirement.

Q6. What is the level of rigour of the program?
Ans: The doctoral program is rigorous. It needs a very high quality of academic commitment and integrity. There are specific requirements at every stage of the Program.

Q7. Where do the Doctoral Program students get placed?
Ans: Doctoral Program is oriented towards training students for academic careers in research and teaching. Such training is most highly valued by academic institutions. But leading Indian companies, MNCs, investment banks and consulting firms also value this program for certain positions requiring specialized research skills.

Q8. When are these students allowed to take up outside employment?
Ans: Students are NOT allowed to seek employment while pursuing their full-time PhD degree.

Q9. Do these students have a separate placement process?
Ans: Institutes and firms looking for researchers contact Doctoral Program students and Doctoral Program office. The students can also avail themselves of the services of IIMB's Placement office.

Q10. I am working in a technical position in my company. I want to switch to a managerial position. However, I have not done any management courses. My first preference is a corporate job. Should I apply for a Doctoral Program?
Ans: For these kinds of career objectives related to a corporate career, a PhD degree might not be the most appropriate.

Q11. What is the selection process of Doctoral Program?
Ans: Based on the information provided by the applicants, candidates will be shortlisted (on the recommendation of the respective areas) for a written area test and/or technical interview. Candidates will be admitted to the program based on a combination of multiple parameters, as specified by each area. Please see document on Area Specific Admission Process for details.

Q12. Do I have to take any test for getting admission into the Doctoral Program?
Ans: Candidates require a valid test score, from any one of the acceptable tests to the area(s) of specialization they are applying to. Please see earlier section in this document for details of acceptable test for each area of specialization.

Q13. What is the purpose of Area specific selection tests and the technical interview?
Ans: IIMB attaches high importance to an applicant's motivation and research capability. Technical interviews of selected applicants allow us to ascertain their motivation for research, and whether their aspirations and preparation are compatible with objectives and expectations of the Doctoral Program. The technical interview and test also gauge the academic preparation of the candidate for the specific area he/she has applied to.

Q14. How many students get selected per year?
Ans: The selection is area specific and entirely depends on the candidate's performance.

Q15. Do I apply for a specific area, or can I choose my area after getting admission?
Ans: You can apply to two areas but must mention your first and second preference in your application. Once a student is admitted to an area, a student is not permitted to change areas of specialization.

Q16. Does IIMB allow foreign nationals to apply for the Doctoral Program?
Ans: Yes, the eligibility criteria are the same, however fellowship funding is not available.

Q17. What is the degree/title that I get at the completion of the course?
Ans: Students are awarded the degree of ‘Doctor of Philosophy’ (PhD) in Management.

Q18. What financial aid is available?
Ans: IIMB provides one of the best financial packages for doctoral students. Currently the students are provided monthly stipend for five years and are exempt from tuition fees. Several grants are available for educational purposes. For details refer to the 'Financial Aid' section of IIMB website.

Q19. Do I have the scope to do interdisciplinary research?
Ans: Yes, much of the research work done by the students is interdisciplinary in nature.

Q20. Do the Doctoral Program students need to teach?
Ans: No, but they are required to work closely with professors as teaching assistants and some may get opportunities to teach a few sessions.
