Hi
I need to send across a 2-3 page research proposal to a couple of Professors. Does anybody have any sample research proposals, I could take a look at before I write mine. Please mail such samples to me at [email protected]. Also a website with such information would also be great help.
Another question I want to put across on the forum is:
1. How do you decide on a topic for research?
2. How do you know that the topic makes sense?

The questions you have raised are very relevant.
Perhaps you are trying to complete your research/PhD in India. Mostly in US - your research work would be guided by the Guide you choose. Most of them publish - and have a rich base in the topics they want to research.
At the place i am doing my course - there are two distinct species
A) Working on live projects/consulting assignments of their thesis guide
B) Working on a topic one is deeply interested in
If you do not fall in these two categories - life for you is trouble.
So how to proceed?'
A) Do a literature review. Spend time in library. Study all and sundry that you come across related to the topic of your interest.
B) Give a deadline for activity A. Say 1.5 months/3 months. Then find out the research gaps.
C) Focus on the gaps which you think you can address - In terms of resources you can manage, the data collection methodology etc. One/two months
D) Now refine the methodology. One month
The REsearch Proposal should be ready.

By the end of any degree program, be it post-graduate or doctorate, the students are required to work on their research skills and are asked to submit their research papers. A research proposal is a simplification of writing on the major aim of the research and the findings that will be addressed through this research. The principal is a shorter version of the research which helps the professors to understand the ideas of the students and what they have been trying to do. In many universities, the acceptance of the research proposal is a very important factor and hence needs to be written in the proper format, as per the given guidelines.
