Let me start by saying I'm still a relative newbie to the business school / MBA thing, and i'm an even larger newbie for a PhD program.
I'm an engineer (class of '07) with 2 years work experience. I also received my master's in engineering management while i was studying my undergrad. My career has been pretty stagnant during this time, and it culminated with my getting laid off a month ago.
In this time period (and also in the few months before that), I began seriously considering going to B-School to get an MBA as a career shift. However, I'd never given any thought at all to a PhD program in business.
My grades in college were solid, if unspectacular (3.44 undergrad, 3.8 grad). My GMAT scores were very high (770; 48 Q, 51 V). My question is - what can a PhD offer me that an MBA can't? I have no passion for teaching, so I don't think I'd like to become a professor. If not a professor, what happens next? What types of jobs are out there for a PhD that an MBA can't do?
I notice that this forum is not heavily trafficked, but I hope someone passing by can provide some insight. Thanks for any tips

based on what you said, phd is not for you. It will take more time and more effort, it is much less structured and it is completely research oriented. If you want to stay in the industry but get into the managerial track you should get an MBA.

^ That's right. A PhD will give you a toolbox for research in business and the credentials for either a teaching/research job at a university somewhere or a research job in some business-related industry (e.g. marketing, finance..). Those are things the MBA won't give you, but if you don't want/need them, there's not much of a use for a PhD.
