Profile Eval for Aug 2011 accounting PhD.
Bachelor's in Accounting from small private school 3.51
MAcc Florida State 3.91
GMAT 700
3 Years accounting exp corporate accounting
5 Years entrepreneur (owned a chain with a few million in sales)
I've had calc I & II, a couple of grad level stats classes, financial econometrics, and linear algebra.
I'm looking at Florida State, Missouri, Arizona, Michigan St, Georgia State, Penn. St. and a few others. Any advice at what I need to improve on or what my chances might be with these universities would be greatly appreciated.

Hey - your profile looks pretty good for a lot of the schools you're targeting. Here is my opinion:
- Strong GPA numbers (Undergrad may be a little low but grad is good)
- GMAT is solid for those programs assuming you had a reasonable split between Q/V.
- Strong accounting background in education and experiences
- Math background is solid.
Areas to address - most of these are more in perception and focusing on connecting your story for your SOP:
- I assume your 8 years of experience came after your schooling so that would mean you've been out of school a while. You may want to make sure you show you still know the things you've learned and can deal with a university environment after so many years away.
- Being an entrepreneur is a very unique background for an accounting phd. I think it works to your advantage to leverage that by relating it to your research interests and building a strong case on why the transition from an entrepreneur to a doctoral student.
- You didn't indicate research interests so the best thing you can do is to spend a lot of time reading research and learning what is out there and what really interests you if you haven't.
- Your LOR choices will probably be interesting.
All in all, you have a great profile in terms of tangible measures and I think you just need to really focus on framing your story for your SOP (i.e. why the transition, how your experiences will help you, what research you're interested in, your ultimate career goals). With a strong SOP, I think you will be very competitive at the schools you mentioned.

Thanks for the reply. Especially about the SOP...very helpful.
My quant is 45 and verbal 41.
I am just finishing the MAac and should have LORs from profs in the MAac. I have taught Financial Accounting for two terms and have been RA for one term. Calc I & II and linear algebra are also recent.
