I received a call today from Cox School of Business admissions regarding the one-year MBA program. I’m excited to share that I was offered admission along with an $18,000 scholarship. I was hoping for a higher scholarship and would appreciate any advice on submitting a counteroffer or requesting reconsideration. Do they typically increase scholarships after a formal request?

Congrats-- that’s a real win and $18K is meaningful for a one year program.

Do they increase scholarships after a formal request?

Yes, it can happen but it’s not guaranteed. Cox explicitly says One Year MBA merit scholarships are limited and that applicants are automatically considered during the application process with awards up to $30,000. What that usually means in practice is: increases are possible if (a) they have remaining funds in that round and (b) you give them a clear reason to re-rank you.

Here’s how to approach this so you maximize your odds.

The only 3 reasons scholarships get bumped


  1. A competing offer from a peer program (ideally same region/tier) with a higher scholarship shared as proof. (Most common lever.)
  2. New information that materially strengthens your profile since you applied (promotion, major award, higher test score, big leadership win).
  3. A clear enrollment signal (you’re highly likely to attend if funding improves) plus a realistic ask.


If you have none of these, you can still ask, but it becomes a “reconsideration request” not a negotiation.

This is so great input , I really appreciate your help.
1. I know it depends on goal but do you think going to one year MBA with such debt is worth it!
2. I have seen people getting full ride,70k on average that Is what is confusing me ?
3. So that 30k is the maximum people get for their one year MBA ?
