I'm sorry that there's been a bit of a delay --- things get busy for us at Magoosh in October. I'm happy to help. :-)

The OA of this GMAT Prep question is (B).

The expectation is right now --- people in the present moment have this expectation, so the present tense is absolutely fine --- either "are expected" or "it is expected."

The "placing" happens in the future, because these female law students won't get to leadership positions out in the world until, at the very least, they have their J.D. already. Since they haven't even entered law school yet (they are entering this fall), this means their graduation and subsequent careers are several steps away in the future. The future tense is most appropriate for this ---- "will ultimately place" in (B). The structure in (D) is fascinating --- it would totally pass as acceptable in colloquial conversation, but technically it is incorrect. Technically, the tense of a participle reflects the tense of the main verb. The main verb is present tense, but the "placing" is not a present tense activity, so technically, this is wrong.

GMAC produced absolutely brilliant questions, and this is one. Choice (D) is a brilliant crafted incorrect answer choice --- so natural sounding, so close to what would be correct, but technically flawed. Brilliant!
