Strengths of the Stern EMBA – A View in 2016The Stern executive MBA (EMBA) program draws a top tier of professionals to its applicant pool each year. Located at New York University in the heart of the city and the center of business, it’s no wonder that the Stern EMBA is so popular. But location is only one of the great strengths of the Stern EMBA, and that’s why it attracts students not just centrally located in New York, but all around the globe – from California to Florida, China to Denmark. There are many reasons to love Stern, but there are three big lures that we see draw students to Stern again and again.
Premium faculty. Almost every EMBA program can say that the same faculty teaches their students and the full-time MBA students ¬– which is, with any top MBA program, an excellent caliber of teaching. But with NYU Stern, professors who teach the EMBA students are the crème de la crème of the faculty. Stern administration handpicks each year the faculty members that will teach the EMBA class based on their teaching experiences, feedback from students, thought leadership and impact in the community. The Stern faculty is known for being active in the business world --- they not only are actively engaged in the community; they also provide research on current events affecting international and domestic markets. Because the average Stern student has ample business/work experience (14 years on average), the EMBA classroom provides a unique opportunity for these professors to bring their knowledge to students in a way that is relatable and engaging.
Solid community. One of the things that attracts students to Stern is the strong sense of community and social life that embodies the small-sized cohorts (60 students on average). The Stern EMBA curriculum requires students to attend two week-long Global Study Tours – one during each year of the program. During these expeditions, students not only learn about international markets in a unique way and visit prestigious businesses (like the Nike manufacturing headquarters in Vietnam, for instance), but the experience creates a distinctive time in the EMBA program for students to get to know each other and form relationships that last a lifetime. Between the Global Study Tours and after-class mixers, the Stern experience cultivates relationships beyond the classroom.
Valuable alumni network. Given that 35,000 of Stern’s alumni pool of 100,000 still reside in New York, it will come as no surprise that the relationships built at Stern persist far after graduation day. You can enjoy tremendous resources through this extensive alumni network.
Location, location, location. As we said before, location is key! If only we could list a fraction of the businesses headquartered in New York City… the Associated Press, CBS, Citigroup, Ernst & Young, JP Morgan Chase, Goldman Sachs, Time Warner and Tumblr – this list doesn’t even begin to skim the top. From retail to finance or supply chain management, New York City has the best of almost every industry to offer rising executives. Not only will you meet some of the top industry executives and leaders, you will have a chance to form relationships with them and some of them might even be your classmates.
